Hey guys,
Last night i decided to smash the sychro's in 2nd gear.
The box was rumbling before hand so i knew it wasnt long before i needed to rip it out ( 1yr of rumbling slowly geting worse )
My question is, Has any one had any of these things rebuilt in the brisbane area and if so how much ?
I realy dont want to spend 1g + on this ####ing car. Recently forked out 5,500 for paint another 300 for a LSD that ####ed out within a month 180 for tail shaft 120 for new rack and close to a grand for other random crap.
So an you can probably tell im about ready to burn this car, Im up for some new rims aswell because the QLD gumbynet cant maintain a proper road....
hey mate. i know a few people whove had them recod. in sydney and the rough cost for parts and labour was 1500.
Pffft - I bought a reco one from Sydney for $950 + $75 freight to melb outright.

I saw a second hand box for $250 on Ebay recently. Had all the conversion bits too so probably could have knocked 50 off the price.
If you have the room you could get a complete spare parts car for the price of one reco'd gearbox.
My plan is to get a good second hand unit, thrash mine until it is about to let go, swap the other box in and then have a go at rebuilding the old one. Nothing to lose really.
Second hand boxes are a real lottery. Most of them have screwed bearings which is what the original posters box sounded like to begin with. I'd prefer to spend the money on a reco box I knew was right myself.

Yeah the bearings werent to bad when first got it, Was a nice box, But slowly started to rumble and rattle, Then the synchro in 2nd let go last night. I got 2.5 years from a 2nd hand box i paid 300 for, So im not complaining in that regard.
Rebuilt my lads T5.That had worn syncro's & shift keys.Seen full rebuild kits for T5's for $500 if you're mechanically inclined..

Are there any special tools ill need ?
Nope.Torque wrench, cir-clip pliers & some small punches to knock some pins out of shafts & some patience.I had to do it with a crying teenager over my shoulder wanting it fixed ASAP...U'll need to have a shop fit the new main shaft bearings for you, other than that you're pretty much rite.Just take care putting everything back in it's correct position & the right way round...Now he's bought another T5 i'm expecting it agen...Dad..
