    Default Vp problems

Ok guys seems i fix 1 thing and something else stuffs up

First: My brake lights dont work when the headlights are on, But work when they're off. Is this to do with rusty tail light looms?

Second: When i get to 70/80kms the speedo flicks back to 0 then back and fourth till i slow back down to 70. Any idea what this could be???

    Cheers again guys,
    Daniel.

1 sounds like rusty looms bad earth issue tailights being on causing brake lights not to work

2 Sounds like the vehicle speed sensor is stuffed time to get another

These 2 problems are most likely the rear looms. A fault or backfeeding in the reversing light circuit will cause the speedo to drop suddenly.
*Do not mess with the speed sender or the dash until you have sorted the rear looms you will waste time and money.*
    As for the looms:
The earth on these looms seems to corrode leading to back-feeding of voltage and bizarre lighting behavior and sometimes odd speedo movement.
You can fix the looms if you are keen and know how to track down the dud connections (caused by corrosion where wire joins metal frame) by testing resistance (continuity) from each pin on the plug to it's end point at the other end of the wire (not just at the end of the wire but at the piece it connects onto) Once you have located the duds mark them then you need to solder the wire onto the metal frame, re-doing the standard connector will not last long. The metal frame will not come out of the plastic holder easily you will need to apply an electric drill to get it out.
Sorting these looms will fix most lighting issues you will ever have on a VN-VP. It's worth sorting out, once you've done one side the next one will take about 15 minutes.
With the looms and plugs out you can also see exactly how the single and double filament bulbs go in and which way around the double filament bulb goes
(hint park light filament is less bright than brake light filament)
You will need a multimeter or a test light and 12 volt battery charger to find the bad connections. I prefer to use a multimeter.
PS you can buy these looms new from Rare Spares for about $30 each.

I jammed a screwdriver in the reverse light holder and it sparked so explains y the speedo is messing up.

Will the speedo go back to normal with new looms?

    Cheers guys

Yes it will stop playing up. On my car the reversing light fault was in the trailer plug thing. Of course I replaced my speed sender and the speedo guts before figuring this one out.

The speedo also does that jump thing if the speedo/reverse light fuse is blown. Must be a back up power source for the speedo so it still gives info. I had a fault in the trailer plug so that when I engaged reverse with the trailer on it would blow the fuse and then the speedo would do that jump down and up once I got to 80 kph
    cheers

Wow mine doesnt heat up at all in 10 mins :S My fan was also not spinning when I first bought the car, replaced the fuse for it in the engine bay and now it works fine.
If the fuse is fine maybe run power straight to the fan and see if it turns on?

Ok so i went over there tonight and she tells me the car was started before and ran for about 15/20mins, Then was started about 5mins after running for 10mins before it overheated.

Will check the fuse tomorrow in the daylight.

    Cheers.

Sounds a bit more serious then a thermo fan. Mine has to be on for longer then that before it even gets to temp to kick in.

Ok guys my Vp just started making a grinding noise from the powersteer pump, The tensioner pulley jumps around abit when turning full lock side to side, It also has fluid.

So im assuming its totally f#cked, Is it worth getting a second hand ps pump from the wreckers?

    Cheers guys,
    Daniel.

Try to find a second hand pump with refab stickers on it, usually big aftermarket stickers that say "National Power Steering" or "APS" or something similar. Indicates they've been reconditioned at some point.

Ok the pump is fine, Was just low on fluid( Was dark when i checked lastnight).

But the fatter power steering hose(below the return hose) has a split and is leaking when i turn the wheel, Can this hoses be removed like and replaced or does the whole metal pipe have to be replaced?

    NOW DONE!

    Cheers guys,
    Daniel.

Ok guys got a wheel alignment afew weeks back, But still had shit tyres on. Got new ones and its still shuddering from about 40kms and feels to be coming from the passanger side wheel so just wonder what could be causing it, Could it be centre bearing in the shaft???

    Cheers guys,
    Daniel.

Id get the front wheel bearings checked, as the VP has the tapered front wheel bearings, and these need adjusting now and then during their service life. If they are noisy at all, they will probably need replacing. They dont cost much to buy, and are easy to fit. The wheel alignment guy should have picked up any problems with the front end before the alignment was done. Heres a link to a complete set of front wheel bearings on ebay going cheap.
