    High idle:
Remove throttle body, check and clean Idle Air Controller (also known as the idle speed control valve). Check and clean throttle position sensor.

    Stall under load:
Remove and check spark plugs, replace if necessary. Otherwise, check other ignition systems like coils and leads.

    Rest the ECU:
Disconnect battery for two minutes, reconnect and start car. Hold in park at high idle (2500rpm) for 30sec and release. Check new idle.

Also check all the vacuum lines as a leak will make the engine idle faster than it should

If you are referring to resetting the Idle Air Control Valve (IAC), after resetting the ECU (by removing the 'Engine" fuse for at least 10 secs), then (if memory serves me correctly), you need to start the engine and take the revs over 3000 rpm for 10 secs. During this time, the ECU will drive the IAC Stepper Motor to fully closed and then back out pre-determined steps - this will allow the ECU to reset the IAC Stepper Motor from the fully closed position, into the correct position.

Been a while since I have done this on my old VN, so the memory could be a tad rusty.

You could try inspecting the vacuum hose that goes to the map sensor. It could be broken or perished. Or could be the actual map sensor faulty. The sensor is located on the firewall an the hose goes from it to the back of the inlet manifold
