so the missus vp lights r shit. what are people doing to upgrade them? dont want hid. would new lenses and new globes do it? what globes are peeps using?
I'm sure you could give them a nice polish up; make them crystal clear, with some brilliant white Halogen bulbs? I made the change on my previous car. The 5000K white lights up the road alot more than the previous standard incandescents.
cheers mate, thats what i was going to try. probly the cheapest option first up i guess
Exactly. Process of elimination cheapest to most expensive is always best.
You'll find if you can get that lens as clear as glass, the new 5000k brilliant white bulb will light up the way like nothing else. Just make sure it's brilliant white.
Though, i'd like to know.. Is there any way to pry off the lens, from the actual headlight unit, so as to polish the inside without damaging seals? I don't need to now, as the headlights are clean as a whistle; though.. It's always good to have that little bit of extra knowledge in the squishy thing in my head.
Thankyou, and good luck!
will try it on the weekend and let ya know how it goes. cheers
Just undo the lights and indicators and take them out then pop the 10 clips off and it just comes apart easy.. Did mine a few weeks ago and cleaned them on the inside glass.. Didn't touch the silver light reflector..
yep easy remove the 10 clips and remove lens BUT DO NOT TOUCH THE SILVER SURFACE it will be very weak and dirty but if you try and clean it you end up wiping the silver off
Beautiful. Thanks guys.I'll get in there and clean them out when I change my globes to Brilliant White!
Its most likely its the reflector as too why there not as bright as they should be
After a good decade the shine fades away making it reflect less light.
Id pull em apart, try clean any residual dirt off the reflector and glass and see if any gain have been had.
Im about to replace my lights, reflector has patches of dull browny silver and can barly see the road in the rain.
Ebay has em cheap 80-100 for pair, cant complain with that price
yeh but the ebay lights are non gen and are crap..... my car came back from panel beaters with non gen lights in it and they worked crap so i went to wreckers bought sum old gen pair of lights took em apart like you said cleaned up and walllllllla!!! good as gold with sum decent globes
Hiya,
VN,VQ, VP, all this series the lights only work well if there is good reflection of light through the glass lens.
Your best bet would be to chase a good set of reflectors, all vn/vq/vp have the same part here, but the headlight glass is unique to vp as it curves more, but get ones with the reflector strip intact.....as in most cases without the reflector strip on the bottom edge of the glass, the light will bounce into the bumper/body space instead of bouncing out to the road. Another option is you can get some high temp engine spray in sliver and spray the bottom edge of the glass and that will help reflect the light onto the road.
thanks,
Who says 5000k light up the road better??? they illuminate worse. Chuck a set of philips extreme vision globes in and polish up the covers.
Holdens of this era seem to have a gutload of scungy thin wires. I'd add a pair of relays next to each headlight with nice fat wire (and a fuse!!) from the battery, and use the original globe feeds to run the relays.
My reflector tape stuff on the bottom of the glass is gone and the previous owner painted the bottom if the glass black.. I put 90/100 globes in it and it's not too bad after I cleaned the glass on the inside.. What can I use to replace the silver on the bottom of the glass?
as stated above, you can re-paint the glass with some engine hi-temp enamel in sliver, or if you can get your hands on some spray on glue that is heat resistant to the heat the headlight produces, you can try to stick some reflective alluminium foil to the outside bottom edge of headlamp, for me the heat paint, worked fantastic.
if yours are pitted and ugly after market ones are available for 50 bucks a pop. im going that way on my project car... just a thought...
dont sweat the petty... pet the sweaty...
cool might give the silver paint ago or if i can finda some good glass lights at the wreckers..
Welcome to the internet where people have opinions that you might not like
had the same globes in my 1990 pajero for 3 years and never melted a wire or had a prob.. The previous owner had 100/130 in the lights so i took them out
Would you like a picture of the last car I have seen with the same globes. Nice and crispy wiring.
Welcome to the internet where people have opinions that you might not like
sure why not..
if u upgraded the wires from relay to headlight with thicker guage wire there wouldnt b a prob mr calais
I have a few mates that have done the head light loom upgrade and it works well when your running bright globes.. I don't have a prob with the wires or plugs in my car I'm just missing the silver tin foil stuff off the bottom of the glass..

I'm a little confused with the relay idea. It sounds good, because the passenger side light in my VN always needs to be replaced quite regularly.
Using a relay, how would you do it? I'm normally pretty good with these things, but I haven't looked at the wiring for a long time on the VN. Is there 3 wires? Brown, Black and Green???
Have I got this right?
Some more info of the wiring up of the relay would be good.
Thanks,
Stockies.
