    Default VN radiator hoses

Just got a new sport temp guage and it came with a piece that apparently u cut a radiator hose in half and have the piece in between as the new sender unit,it says to put it in the top hose where coolant exits the engine,i have a S2 91 VN executive and ive been told that the exit hose is the lower one..which is right?

When standing infront of the car, the water exits the motor from the top hose on left side of engine

Both the same. The difference is on the "S1" the top hose ran to the back of the motor because it was originally mounted in an east-west configuration. The inlet manifold on the "S2" was then changed to suit. Generally the top hose will always exit the motor because heat rises.

The problem with sensing the temp. in the cooling hose is that it only senses the temp. if the thermostat is open and coolant is flowing through into the radiator. Is there any reason not to use the standard sensor location with the new gauge and sensor, other than not wanting to disable the cluster gauge?

It wouldn't take a lot of effort to drill and tap a new hole for the new sensor either. There's probably room adjacent to the existing sensor. Check for clearance to alternator and thermostat, centre punch, drill, tap. This would make it easier to remove the gauge and sensor and plug the hole for the new sensor so you can transfer the gauge to another car or sell it separately. Also, unmolested cars are easier to sell.

Maybe this seems intimidating but worst case you destroy an inlet manifold and you'd have to be pretty incompetent to do that. If you're capable of installing the gauge, I'd say you're capable of installing the sensor in the manifold.

i would do that for a better setup but the new sensor is designed as a join for the hose, like i physically have to cut the hose in half and attach both halves of the hose to either end of the sensor, and the coolant flows through the middle and sends a temp through a wire to the new guage, only problem about all this is finding a hole in the firewall to get the wires through from the dash side. apart from that this setup should be fine, coz if do ever sell the car then replacing the radiator hose would be easy
