Just bought a 5L 5spd VN and it pops out of reverse unless I hold it in. What's normally the cause of a problem like this?

my vl had the same problem, wasnt a t5 but i ended up getting a second hand box. Something was all mushed up inside. Sorry i couldnt be more descriptive :P
Usually its a worn detent or a bent selector fork inside the gearbox, reverse on a T5 is not a constant mesh gear so if you try ram it into mesh hard its easy to break stuff.
Probably a result of years and years of some silly bugger trying to ram the car into reverse. "kkkhhhhhhhhgggggggg grind grind grind".
Not everybody is aware that quickly shifting to fifth and THEN to reverse will avoid this problem and save you breaking everything.

Hey,
Your problem is likely sincro detents, about $4 in parts and easy to fix if you don't mind pulling out your transmission to disassemble/reassemble. The parts are rectangular in nature around the size of a 5c piece, will be easy to see the ones that are busted as they will have disintegrated. They are located in small indents between the gear and the shaft.
Thx heaps for the help guys. The motor and trans is now in one of me VK wagons. I plan on pulling it all out again in a few months to clean it up so will try and fix it then.![]()
