Hey there, first time poster.
The tail lights on my VN have rusted up (the stop/tail section anyway!) -- I can't even remove the globes it's that bad. So I thought - ok to hell with these, so I bought some 2nd hand looms. The description said suit VN VS VP SS - so I gave them a go, one had a trailer plug attached to the loom (my VN doesn't have a trailer plug).
They arrived and I plugged them in, pretty simple job but I have noticed 2 things.
1) When placing foot on the brake the interior dash lights up and the parker lights (lol not a good thing)
2) When placing foot on the brake it doesnt illuminate the breaks that much (maybe a 5% increase in brightness) - so clearly there is an issue.
I tried just one "one of the 2nd hand looms" without the other trailer plug loom enabled, and again, the dash etc lights up with parkers, so I reckon these 2nd hand looms purchased must not be compatible with my car.
So my options are to clear the rust from the old looms (trust me its 10 years of rust moulded around a globe and it looks nasty, or somehow use these new looms to get better brightness and eradicate the parker/dash lighting up at the same time somehow.
If all else fails, does anyone know how much this will cost to fix OR where I can take it to to fix it, Just want my car back on the road!!
cheers, first time poster.

common problem mate, this happens all the time, you have to watch what your buying, test your old loom to see if the problem happens then,if it is still happening then a fuse has probably blown or something, easy fix,but if it works normal then take the new looms back and either go to an auto wreckers and get what you need of your model car that way you know it will suit it,or go to a parts supplier and order the specific ones brand new, never get second hand electronics, something almost always happens
well i live in NSW so i wouldnt know, but usually there are places like auto electricians or auto spares stores that can order in a generic brand of it,or you can try a holden dealership and spend a fortune on them lol
Single Filament Globe in a Double filament globe holder
When brakes are applied, 12v goes across both illumination and brake causing ur dash to light up due to 12v being applied to that illumination circuit
Single globe pin is touching both illumination and brake contacts in the globe holder
I get looms from wreckers, always find sum that are in good nic, just takes alot of hunting to get like new onse.
Thanks Calais_cruzin!
I may just go down to Upullit wreckers and grab some new ones which fit my 1991 vn commodore exec sedan. Out of interest does anyone know if I need to make sure the LOOMS HAVE TO come from a VN 91 Sedan executive or can I get looms from a VP/VN(other year VN's).
Thanks :P
Have seen new looms on eBay for about 30 each
I had the same problem, I also just went to u pull it and found 2 new looking looms for $6 each.
While i was there i cut some of the good plugs off the other looms, Now i can make a good pair out of my old sh#t looms
Been through 2 pairs this winter but hopefully its fixed for good now.
VN have different loom set up to a vp, on VP i beleive brake lights are only on the top when headlights are on. Could b wrong but there is a slight difference
Also VP have the tail light check light, so may be inconjuction with that.
Ino my Tail light warning has been up since i solder up a set of lights so that brake up top n parkers down bottom
There is usually always one good globe holder in a stuffed loom, keep em all n u can eventually make a rust free set
Silicon up ur lights, all way around and also where the tag that holds the 2x parts together, did mine 4yrs ago, only jsut started to leak in the past yr
i swear i got the very last vn/vp tail light loom from upi lonsdale on Wednesday. i found out that you can get them brand new from sprint auto parts. i got a another new one from the edwardstown store. genuine holden loom too. $37.
Beware Of Imitations - Not The Latest Thing, But The Genuine Thing
don't tell that to anyone whos car Ive worked on.
I've dug up heaps of lumes and other electronic bits of crap for many a dunger from the pick a part.
Brake parts are the only thing I wont get involved in dudding (not that i tend to do brakes).
I think the globes are some of the above problem
