Wink Changing Dizzy Cap (VN 5L)

I was hoping to be able to jimmy my dizzy cap up high enough where I could just sit it next to the new cap and change the leads over one at a time without having to take them off and worry about getting the leads out of order.

Seems I can't do that. Does anyone know an easy way to get the cap out? Or is it a matter of numbering the leads, pulling them off the cap, wriggling the cap free, sliding the new cap in and then replacing the leads?

I'm hoping to get it sorted tonight, so all replies are a big help.
