New locks and keys?

I'm after a set of NEW locks and keys for my LS1 VN, the whole lot. The ignition barrel is really playing up and I've lost all patience for it. I don't want to stuff around with shit products, I want to get it sorted out properly so it doesn't go to shit again for another 20 years.

To that end, anyone know if these are any good?

Only problem I can see is the lack of a boot lock (and that's a big problem for me - I WILL not accept ending up with mismatching locks).


Any info appreciated, hopefully this helps out people in future who find themselves in much the same boat.

i didnt know the ignition lock could be separated... but ive never changed one. youll have to drill through that high tensile steel snap bolt on the steering column to change out the ignition barrel. thats what im assuming.... you can always shave the boot lock and wire up a factory actuator on a hidden button.... or wire it up to a after market alarm on a remote popper. otherwise you gotta strip another vr or something for this set and then you might just be buying the same problems youve got now....

it's already got a boot button in the glove box but it doesn't work that well and I'm not sure how to go about fixing it.

I'm not real keen on shaving the lock at the moment. That can happen with the rest of the bodywork whenever I get around to it.

Turns out you can 'code' a new lock to any key so I'll just buy the set and do it that way I think.

Yeah, As you said above, I spoke to a locksmith about my locks, and they said they can re-code locks for $44, But they recommend changing the barrel and drivers lock, and coding the passenger and boot

I know that Nice do a full lock and barrell set (boot, two doors, ignition) all matched. Ask around at your nearest parts supplier.

i got the ebay one and it is fine to get the old one off the easy way = dremel set up as grinder and gently cut the old bracket

my car got stolen and the ignition barrel was stuffed got a second hard barrel off ebay for like $20 had mismatched keys though, ended up getting an alarm which had remote central locking haven’t opened a door with a key in ages, so I’ve completely forgotten about the other key, maybe something to keep in mind, he wired it up for remote boot release as well which is awesome.
Your button is probably working just not the boot release itself they’re like $10-20 on ebay fit in like 2 minutes

You've raised a good point with the ignition barrel... now I need to find some info on how to actually change these!

I am pretty sure there as (are?) "How To's" and/or previous posts on swapping the ignition barrel - there's a bit of a trick to releasing it.

(Re)coding locks is really easy - almost fun. You get a full set of the tumblers with the new locks and you just have to match the numbers on them up with the ones in the old locks, using a dab of grease to hold them in place against the springs.

If you really get it wrong - say drop the tumblers out before noting the numbers or mix them up - you can do it by trial and error, just get the tumblers to sit flush with the outside of the barrel with the key in the barrel.

Worst case, leave a tumbler or two out (but you shouldn't have to). (Using no tumblers at all means that any Commodore key will open the lock.)

On a VN, there should be provision for adjusting the boot release solenoid; two Philip's head screws in slotted holes. You may find that taking any play out of the pullrod fixes the remote release. Sometimes winding out the rubber stops that the boot lid closes against can help too, as can adjusting the boot latch striker, where the catch releases but the boot doesn't spring open.

its vision cant remember the model though, alarm,immobiliser,remote central + remote boot for 400 installed.

Boot lock and Driver/Passenger door.
Might be worth a look into (ebay or similar)

As a Locksmith for the last 26 years I would not recommend Solex's, they can cause more trouble than its worth...

As all ready mentioneed the Nice product isn't to bad and in some cases actually better quality than the Holden stuff...

Having said that Nice recently supplied 1000's of ignition cylinders to Holden due to a supply problem and rebranded them
as a GM product
