    Default Problems with gear changes.

Hey guys when i got my car a while back i noticed that the gears were thumping into gears and thought this was alittle sus and i was hoping it wasnt a stuffed gearbox.
Anyways took the car to a mechanic and he checked it out and put new oil in and also a new gearbox filter.
Issue i still have its thumpin a little when it goes from gear to gear still. The MASSIVE issue i have is it takes freaking ages to go into reverse so i have to sit there sometimes and hold the gear lever and move it around a little till it engages and goes into reverse which shits me to tears.
Iv been told all these issues could only be something simple like the gear lever is screwed or the gear box is shagged. Could someone give me some hints or help PLEASE>... Brock.. .Thank you..

Is the thumping more of a "shock" when changing from gear to gear? Would you describe it as a "crispy" gearchange or a "whump" of mechanical noise?

The slow change into reverse is commonplace with an old gearbox, and an early symptom of internal wear and the need for an overhaul. There is a small chance that it could be a linkage adjustment issue, but this is very uncommon with the stepped-type floor shift on a TH700.

A weak or broken accumulator spring can lead to pressure variations and hard shifts, as well as slow transitions to reverse and other gears.

I'm leaning towards a gearbox overhaul, an away from a "simple gear lever".

    You have two options:

    1) try your luck with a second hand gearbox from eBay or a parts dismantler
    2) try your luck not getting ripped off by a transmission specialist on a full rebuild.

$200-$400 will see a decent second hand TH700 in your hands
$700-$1000 will see a well reconditioned gearbox with new clutches, cleaned valve body, and new springs + servos.

Are you mechanically adept? You could save a bit of money removing the transmission and taking it in for a rebuild yourself.

Are you feeling very aventurous? You could perform a complete manual transmission conversion yourself for the same price as a costly transmission overhaul. Just sayin

But yes, your gearbox is broken, and yes you need to look into it before it leaves you stranded on the side of the road with no gears

What colour was the oil before the change? If it was a very dark brown or even black, then that is definitely a cause for concern.

As Morton said, a cheap fix would be a 2nd hand TH700, they're fairly common these days.

Even then, if the oil was crap and his "mechanic" dropped the pan and topped up the fluid, there's still going to be 2 litres of fresh DEXIII in there, and 10 litres of crappy old gunk. You hardly see a mechanic drop the cooler lines and pump a drum of fresh fluid into a transmission any more.

I'm sort of having this same problem as well and its only started since the front end has been re-done.

cross member taken out and a new one added. since that has been done the automatic transmission is playing up.

G'Day, just purchased a very cheap vp, recon motor but the trans (auto) needs the work, extreme oil leak and as far as gear changes go You have to rev at the change drop a thousand then pick back up, very troublesome. Towed it home, better safe then sorry.

I'd be checking the adjustment of the control cable at the throttle. If the front end was taken out and they removed the engine then this would have been disconnected.
To adjust you pull the cable out so it's tighter and push the accelerator pedal to the floor, the cable then clicks back in tot he correct position.
I found with my VN that 1 or 2 clicks from the position obtained by following the corrcect adjustment procedure made a lot of difference. If it was snappy releasing the tension 1 or 2 clicks made it nice and smooth. I;d be checking this cable and trying a few different positions either side of the position after it's adjusted.
