A rattle gun is the easiet way to do it. But you can use a pair of vice grips on the very top of the shaft as close to the top of the spring as you can. Wrap a piece of rag around the shaft as well so there is less chance of damage.

Yep, rag and vice grips will do the job. When it is all back together and on the ground, give it a final tighten as the weight of the car will be on it and you can tighten it a bit more.

Offset open ring spanner and a flat head?

Its easier to get it undone when the weight of the car is still on the shock... if you rattle it loose then you take the strut out then you can undo it easier.

    aZk.

    1) Big ring spanner around the nut
    2) Big flathead in the top of the shock, and a long thin bar through the handle of the screwdriver for leverage.
