hey guys/ girls
just bought a new speco meter oil pressure gauge(i no i settled for second best) any way i been told that vns run on 40 wen cold and 50 wen warm, mine is on aorund 40 neally all the time on , but wen crusing or pumping it, it gets too arond 60 but no matter how much more i put my foot down it doesnt o past it, is this normal or have a got a bad gauge... also wen i just rev it, my gauge sticks wen going up and down, i guess its cause its just a cheeper brand
is yours electronic or mechanical? What the reading you are giving is ok. You should get worries when the pressure drops to 5psi on idle. When the reading are around 40-60psi when the engine is running it's okay
They changed the pressure relief spring in the later VNs and early VP to give higher oil pressure.
The early one is 64 mm long then they made it 66mm for series 2 and VP.
If you have never changed this spring you might find you still have a short spring installed.
Early pressures were 340kPa max (50psi)
With the later spring 414kPa max (60psi)
I think if you buy a replacement spring from GM they have superseded to the later spring.
I,m running 15W 40 oil and my minimum pressure is around 50 psi with the newer spring installed.

i would believe mine has origanal spring as it is the 88 vn engine series 1 and my minimum is 40 psi... but im just curious, will it ever get over 60, cause i hit 4 -5 thousand rpm and it never got over 60, so thats only a range of 20 psi, yet around 4 its already 60 and up too 5 tho rpm it didnt move
I don,t think it will or should go above 50 psi for original or 60 psi for the new regulator spring.
Sounds like your oil pressure is fine anyway.
I,m using a mechanical gauge with copper line and mine never goes over 60, the pressure relief is supposed to be the thing that stops too high a pressure.
When I took my old spring out it was about 4mm shorter than even the original spring was supposed to be , they must get weaker with age.
I suppose it,s not a good thing to start getting too high an oil pressure as it could start coming out of places you don,t want it to.
If the book says minimum is 40 psi at 1850 rpm, I wouldnt be worried if you,ve got at least close to that.
