    Default Speedo not working

    Hi,
My speedo will work for a few minutes then the needle just drops to zero.
When it goes off neither the speedo or odometer work
Ive got a feeling its the speedo sensor in the transmission as the old whack the dash trick dosent work. I have another VN as well which does the same thing but you can whack the dash on that one and the speedo will work.
Thats what makes me think it is the speedo sensor.

    Thanks

    Hi,
I have a vn as well and my speedo, temp gauge did the same thing but the bash the dash trick worked. But in the end i just got a replacement speedo. It works fine but the temp gauge and petrol doing occasionly so i think you might be right but look at a new speedo dash board.
    Catch ya later

    sOsage,
No need for a reply like that.
Im asking for confirmation if it is that from someone that might have had the same problem.

i think the speedo runs to the auto box, my mates on his blue bird was a cable or osmehting it it was just bolted on, he only did it hand tight and the speedo only some times worked... althought it was a bluey i think it would be similar, find were it hits the box and check its tight, or even attached

where the speedo cable attaches to the front of your trans, unplug it from there, it should just be held in by one bolt and a little plate.

When you unplug it, pull it out dead straight, and you'll have a little plastic cog sitting on the end of it. Check this cog for wear, if it looks like the teeth have been flattened out, replace it.

In case you're speedo's out, it would also be a good opportunity to change the cog to one with more/less teeth to set the speedo right again.

Forgive me if this doesn't work on the VN
I've never tried this on mine, but i did it on my VB years ago.

My counter done exactly the same thing but when i replaced it, it worked fine so just havign a look at the connection in the dash cause it mite not be touching the computer part. Make shaw it is pushed in properly either side.

    Hope it helps!!!!

Shit, the VN has an electronic speedo doesn't it, not mechanical.

i replaced my dash cause it was playing up , although i just bought another 3 aguge one but it had 300thousand k's on it and my car has only done 180 so i just swaped the speed ounit over... cause it may not be the unit playing up it may just be connections... also although illegal my mate relised u can wind the k's back... he sorta explained it, its really easy apparently, so just wind back to ur old k's
