do a search of vn steering rack's and find the part number you need, then cross reference this part number with other models. I would imagine any VN VP VR or VS would be very similar, but I'd do the part number search as some vehicles had Variatronic steering racks.
I have a WH II statesman, and need a new rack also, I was assuming any VT or VX rack would fit, but apparently certain VIN numbered vehicles have different threads on the racks, so for me to find a second hand unit I have to find a VX S2 with a certain VIN number or higher.
just do some research of what will fit your car, and you will be able to widen your search slightly

The VN has a different spline pinion to VP VR.

I just bought a reconditioned rack for my VS off ebay,(the normal or non variable type rack). It cost $220 and $25 delivery, and I didnt even have to leave a $150 deposit for the exchange, or have to send them back my old rack like a lot of places that sell this type of stuff want you to do. This rack also came fitted with new rack ends and new corrugated rubber boots fitted, so theres no having to fit the boots or the rack ends etc, which saves a bit of mucking around, just bolt it straight up pretty much. It took me around 1 hour to do, but I also had to undo the drivers side extractor so I had enough room to remove the old rack.
Id recommend looking at ebay for a reco rack, and I reckon around the $200-$250 mark isnt too bad a price for a recoed one. My car steers and feels way better now too since Ive fitted the new rack and had a wheel alignment done, and Ive noticed that theres no more knocking sound, which you could just hear when the steering wheel was turned slighty from side to side without the car running, I reckon this noise was probably caused by wear which caused a slight movement or excessive play between the rack and the pinnion.

definately the way to go, if you do get one from a wrecker, you'll probably find it won't be long until it needs replacing, especially being a VN as they are around the 20 year old mark now. I think if you look for a Reconditioned unit they are cheaper and you don't need to exchange your rack. while the remanufactured racks are more expensive and you need to leave a deposit and send your rack as an exchange.. reconditioned would be around $200 - $300 while the remanufactured racks would probably be around the $300 - $400 including exchange.

Found out the steering rack on my VP Calais has a leak.
Was quoted $480 for a fully recoed one, boots n all, fitted. (has the speed sensor)
Bought a bottle of Lucas brand 'Rack and Pinion Stop Leak' for $13.85, which they advertise as having a
"Money Back Guarantee", and guess what...? No more leak, it works!!!
Saved meself a heap of dollars and hasn't leaked one drop since!
Is probly only a temporary fix, but it'll do me, for now.
