my 1991 vn will start but die right away after a splutter.i did get it going again to get it home from were it first stuffed up but now it wont work at all.

just wondering if it is the fuel pump or if it could be anything else

also were is the fuel pump located inside or outside of the tank?

Its in the fuel tank behind the diff, Get under the back of the car and have someone try and start it. You will hear the pump if its working!

Also its not hard to change, Just remember what way u twist to get it out!

It doesn't sound like the pump as it prob wouldn't even fire up but you could check to see if its priming - turn key on to ignition and stick your head under the back wheel to have a listen

replace your plugs/leads if they haven't been done lately
Also VN/VP models sometimes have issues with the coilpacks

How old is the fuel pump? It could be a sign that it is not working within spec. You have to consider the actual fuel pressure as well as if it primes. If it's been in there 150,000km plus for the peace of mind it may be a good idea to replace it. Other than the fuel pump if it's fuel related check the pressure regulator on the fuel rail.
I'd be checking the fuel pressure. I had a fuel pump fail with little or no warning, one day it was hard to start and idled bad for a minute then ran. The next time I went to start it it would not start and could not be coaxed into going
