Was dawdling down the road at maybe 20kph with the (auto) shifter in 3rd not 4th and because the car was going so slow it was actually in 2nd. So far so good. Then I pulled it back to 2nd and the only thing that changed is the position of the shifter - box was still in 2nd gear. The difference was that now I could hear very plainly the whirry noises coming from inside the box. It was as if something was now touching the underside of the floor and transmitting noises by contact. Last time I looked I couldn't see anything obvious. Are there any rubber bushes on the gear linkage that go hard after many years or is there some way the linkage could be touching the floor and making noises come through?
nup just the transmission mount but that would mean it'll be doing it all of the time, it could be the selector hitting the loom or something under there?
Had a further listen to it tonight with the door open and the car stationary. Almost seems like the tranny makes a different sound when you slip it into "2". I suppose the fluid path in the valve body is different so it makes a different sound. Could someone else try it on their car and see if they get the same thing?
Does it sound like a grinding sorta noise?
My VN S2 does a similar noise (a whirrrr) when held back in 2nd. Could be normal?
my auto box does this as well, but only when i hold it in first and second. has done it since i have had it, iam just guessing its just the different fluid pressure and gear ratios making a little noise. don't think anything is worn as it has a firm and crisp change and never lags in changing or when i engage it so iam just guessing its something the servers 2 vn transmissions do...
Mmm.... just making it clear - got no issue with the box making noises in 1st or 2nd gear as such, just that if the box is =actually= in 2nd and the lever is moved from 3 to 2 and it is in 2nd gear both times because of road speed but the box sounds different. Odd... Hafta climb under and have another look.
