If you followed the top hose to the motor then found the thermostat housing and took it off and it's not there then you don't have a thermostat..

On the series 1 motors the thermostat is located under the throttle body at the rear of the motor. Its an absolute prick of a job. If you cant find it follow your top radiator hose out of the radiator into a metal pipe that leads behind the motor to another rubber hose, The thermostat housing is after that.

The biggest problem with running no thermostat, is there's no regulation of water flow. Hot water is pumped too fast through the radiator and doesn't have time to cool down.

That said, it shouldn't be overheating anyway. It's possible the system had an air lock if your temp raised really fast.

Should use coolant. If the temp was below freezing the water could of frozen blocking coolant flow and caused hot spots.
