    Default V8 to V6 Conversion ?

    Hi every one

I am saving some money to buy a 5 ltr V8Holden VN SS Commodore and im only 15 turning 16 soon. Now since i cant drive a V8 any were i wanna buy a V6 Commodore engine and use that until i get my full license. Now before i go buying a VN SS can i convert it to a v6 until i get my open license than put the V8 back in ?

the reason for trying to buy a VN SS is becouse thay are cheap, they got some power and i wanna project car so when i turn 18 i have a nice VN insted of waiting until i turn 18 and then spending time on it and i have lots of time to spend right now

    cheers

You will need a V6 K frame, V6 gearbox, V6 computer and complete loom, V6 exhaust section etc. Can be done in a weekend if you're fast. :-)

Can you legally drive a V8 when you turn 18 up in QLD?

If you're hell bent on having a VN SS, you could buy a cheap V6 VN/VP thats in decent nick, maintain it well but don't spend a cent on mods, save up for the VN SS at the same time, buy it when funds permit, then when you have your full license, sell off the V6 car or keep it as a daily.

Why the hell would you waste money on a SS then ruin it completely by going 6.

Bizmark im sure you can i think once you have your opens you can drive a V8 im not to sure

and i might do what u said ill just buy a good V6 and save up for a Vn ss. or i might just save up $10.000 for a VN SS and i will use my mums old ED Falcon that she doesnt want. I have no hate against fords i think some of them are nice like a XB but it will suck driving a ford for 4 or 5 years. Na ill just use the ED for a wile and ill get a 6 cyl VN or maybe a VL than get a VN SS.

Thanks every one for the reply's

Pretty simple swap mate, As others have said - front subframe, computer, engine loom, gearbox. everything just plugs/bolts in aside from that. The v8 rev counter wont work with the 6, though.

I did this conversion on my VP calais, uses way less fuel and is heaps more sedate with the v6 in.

the easiest and cheap option is....... buy a VN SS and and cheap rolla or dato etc. leave the SS in the driveway till you turn 18 and do it up fricken sweet in the wait till your birthday, will be alot cheaper and alot less f*cking around

@Ducker85 yeah i might do that my mum has a ED falcon that she doesnt want i guest i could use that for 4 or 5 years. I have nothing against ford but it will suck driving a falcon when i would have a VN SS in my shed covered in with a car cover. only thing i could do is sit there and dream of driving it. I will try to do that then thanks

@ Bizmark you can only drive a V8 when you have your opens so you will have to be 18 anyway. its gonna be a long time until i get my opens. i have to do 200 hrs of learning and that will take about two yrs or more becoz my mum is at work all the time and then once i get my license i have to do another 4 or 5 years until i get my opens so all up i have to wait about 6 or 7 yrs until i can dive the VN SS or any V8. But im sure i will take it for a spin anyway :P

wow in 7 years the VN will be a antique maybe just dont buy one if you have to wait that long.

I've had my licence for 8 years now, lost it once, owned 1 V6 VP, 1 V8 VL wagon, 3 V8 VP's, a supercharged V6 VT and now i've got my VE clubbie

so maybe hold off buying an 8 if you have to wait that long.

Why anyone would buy a car that they cant drive for 7 years in its original form is beyond me.... Buy a v6 and put the ss inertia in it then buy a 304 v8 for 1000 bucks when you can drive a v8.....

Or as my dad would say "ya cant have your cake and eat it too"

Look around for a VN 'Formula'. They were a dress up kit that had most (all?) of the SS body kit but without the spot lights (from memory). Most were V6's and are as cheap as chips. The difference in cost between a clunker and one in top condition is not huge so take your time and look for a good one. Other options might be the "S" and some SS's were V6 as well. They are getting harder to find but there are still quite a few around. I wouldn't bother with the changing back/forward thing - buy another V8 if you want one and have something special in the shed for when you are able to drive it.

Dont waste your money mate, chances are in 7 years you will not be interested in the SS at all, it will just be a rusty old car you wasted your money on and never drove.

Think about it, in 7 years you will be able to buy a 190kw alloytec or ls1 VZ for just a couple of grand.

Also mate, your idea of "keep it in the shed and drive it to the shops once a month" wont last long. Because 'once a month' will eventually become 'once every 2 weeks' then 'once every 2 days' and after that it will just be a daily driver. And trust me mate, a vn ss is not worth losing your license over.

Just settle for a v6, then in 7 years go buy something thats not some 30 year old POS (which the VN will be).

Yeah im sure people said that about the rover SD1.

And the amount of money you will spend keeping A vn ss pristine for the next ten years could have bought you a better car than a vn ever will be.

I know what its like man, you want to buy a sweet vn, change every fluid and consumable part in it and replace them all with only the best bits. But at the end of the day, all you are doing is spending big money on a car that simply isnt worth it, and not really improving it or making it any more valuable. I was like that with my VR, it was my first car and I probably spent twice what it was worth on it. I ended up scrapping it because it was still a vr exec and worth stuff all.

true I might just save up for a vy then or a vx or maybe a vs. I just wanna spend all my time and money on one car that will last a lifetime i have a friend and he has owned 7 or more different cars and he is only 23 some cars he has for a couple of months. He brought a toyota hylux about 3 moths ago and now he is trying to sell it. the car he had for the longest is a suzuki jimni and he had that for about a year. i remember one time he had a ford ea, eb, ed ford falcon (it was one of them) and he had it for a month he had a holden astra and he had that for a couple of weeks . there was only one car he owned that was worth geting rid of. Any way as i said before a want a car that i will have for at least 20yrs
