Default VP front wheel bearings - hub looks weird

Okay so when I think of front wheel bearings I think of my old HJ and it had a stub axle and the hub fits over this and there was a cap covering up the big nut on the end of the axle. Now the VP is different - the centre of the hub looks similar to the centre of the rear axle, no tin cap on the end. I want to replace the wheel bearings but is it very hard with this type of hub? Does someone have a drawing of this kind of setup?

I'd have to pull the wheel off to post a pic because it has those VB, VC etc plastic covers between the hub and the wheel covering up the centre of the hub, as well as the normal plastic hub caps. I saw it once when the tyres were getting changed.

The VIN number says VP so yep :-)
A wheel bearing ad I saw said they fitted VP till some date in '92 and VP went till '93 I think so maybe the hubs got changed somewhere during the lifetime of VPs?

The front end has been done up at some stage before I got the car so it's quite possible it's not original. I'll pull a wheel off on the weekend and take a pic and post it.

I wouldn't have said 'common'. Ever tried to source strut tops that fit a 22mm VS shock stub and bolt into a vn/p strut tower? Hahaha expensive. You'd know straight away. The camber would either be pumped out to -6 deg or the wheels would be outside the guards ^_^

that said, some people wouldn't notice.

So when I have a look and take a photo of these hubs, assuming they are not VN / VP type, could they only be VR / VS or could they be even later model? If they could be later ones how do I tell what they are?

The front hubs for VN/VP wont fit on a VR or VS, the VR/VS uses a completely different strut mounting bolt pattern, and a different amount of bolts, to hold the struts to the body. The VR/VS also had a wider track than the VN/VP. The VN/VP used the old type tapered bearing wheel bearings, these were done away with for the VR/VS, so are completely different setups. The whole hub has to be replaced when the bearings wear out on the VR/VS, and they cost a heap to replace, especially when when compared to a $10 set of "old style" tapered wheel bearings for VN/VP's. Apparently holden had a lot of problems with wheel bearing adjustment with the VP's with the tapered bearings, as these type of bearing need to be periodically adjusted to remove the sideways movement or "play" from them, which was never a problem really before until they started to fit ABS wheel sensors to the VP's. They had problems with ABS error codes setting because of bad front wheel bearing adjustment, which would then upset the ABS sensor on each front wheel, and trigger an error code to log in the ABS system, and cause the ABS dashlight to come on. So, they moved to a fixed bearing type front hub and bearing, all in one single sealed unit. The brake disc just slides over the hub on VR/VS and is only held there by the wheel. With the old setups on VN/VP, the wheel bearing held the front brake disc in place, so these are completely different too.

No photos yet, sorry. Got another issue with coolant squirting out between inlet manifold and head. I hate this car.

Well well well, I must have been having imagination attacks. It is standard VP as per the photo. Ah, well.
