Default Are VN shocks gas or oil?

Hey, just wondering if the standard rear shocks in a vn are gas or oil? and how to tell if they are leaking?
Also are they easy to take out?

    thanks

All shocks have oil in them (except high end foam cell 4X4 shocks). The gas just stops the oil from cavitating (mixing with air and getting small bubbles through it) when in use. Factory VN shocks are not gas charged. To tell if they are leaking, look for a wet patch where the lower part of the shock goes up into the upper shield, if it looks wet and dirty at the top then they are leaking.

They are very easy to replace, one bolt at the bottom, then a nut at the top inside the boot. It is easier with two people, one to hold the shock and one to undo the nut inside the boot, as the shock will turn if not held still. You can do it on your own if you have long arms, reach in through the wheel arch to hold the shock while you undo the nut inside the boot with the other hand.

It is generally easier to fit the top one first, then fit the bottom one. Or at least put the top one through the hole and slip the eye over the mount on the bottom.

You can't really get it wrong, the only thing to watch is getting the washers and rubbers in the right order. Take note f how they are on the ones you take out and you will be right.
