Well just got my VP back from getting lpg fitted. I already had a donut tank so I only had to get it inspected.
A friend of mine fits gas so he got me a Airod kit and showed me what to do and I fitted nearly everything he just finished it off and signed it off. All up including checking the tank it cost me $1400.00 and I will receive the $1250.00 rebate. Cant beat that $150.00 to fit LPG.
Now I just have to get my odometer working to see what k`s I get compared to my missus vapour injected VY.
It seams to run great so far and it starts on petrol then switchs over by itself to gas when it warms up.
I cant really feel any difference to when it is on petrol.
not so much once it warms up, it starts on petrol cause there's fuel there ready to go, it'll switch to gas pretty much instantly and turn the injectors off once it's running so it doesn't have to try and get the gas into the cylinder from first start while cranking slow, stops the issue of a plenum & intake pipe full of gas and copping a backfire BOOM there goes the air filter box made of plastic.
You should be able to find the VDO gear on ebay for a few buck, they generally crack and let go of the shaft so the odo stops turning, fiddly but easy enough to fix. Your speedo is still working?

And your theory on straight gas powered engines and starting is ?????????
I just assumed it ran on gas till it got some heat in the mixer not so much warmed up but not cold.
I have changed the gears on the speedo and it does work some times but not allways.
I originally swapped them for the same reason but there was no teeth missing on the original set either the new ones worked untill I reset the odo when I was moving. I might pull it out tommorow and have another go as I do have another gear ready to go and yes the speedo still works fine. Thanks
theory on straight gas? non really it's a good setup if done correctly, a lot of earlier efi gas conversion tended to have an issue with backfires that is all, on a carby engine it wasn't so much an issue as the aircleaners were usually housed in metal and there wasn't such a large volume in the venturi and air cleaner compared to the plenum and intake pipe of an efi setup you'll sometimes see on older lpg conversions a round piece of rubber (sometimes with a round piece of plastic covering most of it) screwed into the top of the airbox or a tube with a round rubber somewhere along the intake pipe that acts as a check valve, when the mixture ignites usually on startup it relieves the pressure quickly and seals under vacuum to stop the whole plastic air box exploding thing. Then they went to a system that starts on petrol n quickly swaps to lpg and the problem was basically resolved, unless it's way out of tune or the timer for killing the injectors is set to long and floods the engine with petrol and lpg which can cause it to backfire also.
wasn't so much stripping teeth they generally split from the center out from the ones i've seen and fixed, maybe try a small bit of super glue to stick the gear to the shaft.
