Default Speedo wont work even after changing the gears.

I have change both the gears in my speedo twice to try and get the trip meter to work. Both times it works sometimes and other times it wont work at all. The other thing is when it does work it is sort of notchy as the klms tick over.
Anyone got any ideas, the only thing I can think of is that something is worn and that one of the gears occasionaly is off centre or something like that and doesnt messh in properly. Everything looks fine.
I think I might just get another speedo and see how that goes unless someone comes up with a better idea..

Did you check for broken teeth in the sprockets that drive the odometer? They break off from the gears that you are replacing and will stuff the mechanism pretty badly if left in there.
I know other parts can fail in there. Such a common prob there must be other threads about it
    cheers

I've tossed out 4 speedos in the last month because I cannot get them to work. The moment I take the motor out and grear out the odo spins over free as - in any direction. I've swapped over motors, cogs, cog gear that the sun grear sits on - all fail in the cluster - spin over in my hand - but stop in the car. I've stripped the speedo down to bits and there is no teeth in them anywhere (common to miss 1 tooth inside the cogs and this can stop the speedo).

In the end I've settled on the reason as to be the motor some how being too tight (unknown reason for this at this time). 3 of the binned speedos were VP's and 1 VN.

Thanks fella`s I havnt found any broken teeth at all even when I pulled out the original gears. I have replaced the original gears twice now so I think its time to find a new speedo.
If I get a VR or VS will the insides of the speedo be the same as a VN VP as long as its not digital I gather they are the same.

I fit VR VS gauge sets to VN and VP clusers all the time. If you have a L2 VP cluster - a VR or VS set will fit in with no modification at all.

Thanks Mate I only have the poverty pack, but I`m fine with that as there is less to go wrong, when I have other cars that I would rather be working on. Anyways the swap meets start up soon so I should be able to get one pretty cheap from one model or another and use the parts to fix mine. At least I will have two new sets of the gears that I can use as I am sure thats not the problem. Thanks Chris.

I had a pretty good score today I do a delivery across the road from a guy who smashed a VR or VS not sure which one anyway I asked him about the gauge cluster he said he sold it and then I found out it was a Berlina anyway. As I was about to drive off he walked out with another VR cluster and said is this what you want and I asked him how much and he sold it to me for $10.00.
So I did the swap of the speedo mechanism and now my odometer works although it is still a bit notchy and for some reason my car has done 100,000 less klms. HeHeHe. To bad the log books tell the truth.
