Hi everybody
I'm hoping somebody can point me in the right direction..I brought a 97 VS 2 days ago, been driving fine no problems then all of a sudden I was driving down the free way and it just stalled so I just drove it off the road...nothing unusual with the temperature, I went to start it, got dash lights but no turnover or anything...guessed it was the alternator but after waiting for about 20mins for a new battery to get to me to at least get me home, it started.....tested the battery and it wasn't the alternator because the battery was charging and I've been driving again to work for a day and no problems...I don't know much about car motors
Try the Crank Angle Sensor (CAS), next time it does this open the bonnet and pour some cold water onto the CAS, if it starts right away then the CAS is faulty. If it's not that take a look at oyur fuel pump and circuit.
Dirty battery terminals?
MY 97, you say you don't know much about motors.
The Crank Angle Sensor is located behind the passenger side of the Harmonic Balancer.
The Harmonic Balancer is the large round thing on the bottom of the front of the engine which the fan belt runs around.
I had the same problem with a VP, it would just stop when it felt like it and a new Crank Angle Sensor solved the problem.
If it does it again, turn the key to off then see if it will start after that, if so, then the CAS is a good chance.
This is my vr that I rebuilt ....CLICK HERE to see my vr on Cardomain

I wouldn't have thought so. Try the self diagnostic. Cas should have logged a fault
Could be a combination of things, when he said it just died whilst driving it that's a good indication of somethiong wrong with the CAS. If it wouldn't even crank then the battery is the first thing to check then the battery terminals. The car would also stop if the battery went flat and no charge from alternator but I do't think a bad battery on it;s own or bad battery leads woudl stop the car once it's going, at worst it could cause the alternator voltage to spike and damage some electronics.
