Hey all,
Ran into a problem on my way to summernats 25 today. Cops and EPA were out in force and long story short I failed the noise test.
My current system is a 2.5" cross over to dual pipes. Don't know much about it apart from that as it was already on the car when I got it over 2 years ago.
I tested at 94db and apparently need it to be under 90.
$150 fine later and I'm stuffed if I know what to do next!
Help!!??
Get a different exhaust, get defect cleared..
I read somewhere that there was leeway with the exhaust noise levels. I think it was something like "the level must not exceed the prescribed level by more than 5dBA". This was in NSW too, I would look into that.
Oh the lovely fuzz..
It's really hard to get a stroker quite unless you've got a stock system. Mate of mine has electric bypass values on his VE maloo. Cost a bit to set up but works a treat. Hit the switch and she's quite as for a 6.2lt with 465 hp atw's. He's got massive custom made extractors and twin three inch exhaust.
Or you could try some good old fashion hot dogs. 4 DB over is really nit picking though.
Just get a very short length of pipe with the end blanked off and use it to block off one of the pipes and see if that shuts it up enough for a test. Try both sides (one at a time, that is!)
thanks for the tips... really don't want to have to change the exhaust over all this... few people have said try the old steel wool up the exhaust pipe trick but i dunno how game i am lol
i'm very lucky i wasn't 1 more db (5 or higher) as the fine would have gone from $150 to $250... revenue raising pricks...
What rev range did they test the car at? Just get another muffler put in the rear and see how that goes?
some of the replies make it sound like i intended it to be loud... i didn't... i bought the car with the exhaust it has now and didn't even think it would be "too loud"...
apparently it was tested at 3500rpm... i'm trying to find out if thats right or not but i can't find the info online... only that it must be under 90db for a car and 94 for a motorbike :\
it really shits me how quiet my car is compared to sooooo many other things on the road though and i'm one of the couple dozen that got pulled over... the cops basically had a spotter looking for nice/done up cars and pulled em over no matter what feeding them to the EPA arseholes
@Reaper... i've driven to summernats a few times in my car (this was my first year entering) and i've never run into a setup like this... so take your sarcasm elsewhere mate... it was total bullshit and its as simple as that
just found the paperwork and had a bit of a read... it say 90db @ 3300rpm... my fiance saw he was going over that to 3500 or so... so i'm not sure what they are actually meant to test at
anyway to find this out?
Think hear in Vic they test the car at 3000 rmp or idle.. Did they sticker the car or just a fine? Sucks ass mate.. Just a quick question about your stroker, did you build it or came with the car and how much would a 355 kit be worth?
The road side test is done to the testing person's satisfaction. Not all conditions in the ADR testing procedures are strictly adhered to, but if the car fails a road side test, the procedure is pretty close so it would fail anyway.
Have the noise test done at an EPA testing station and they will give you a more accurate level.
What's your intake like? Sometimes just changing to a stock panel filter can drop the exhaust noise a couple of dBA.
get a thin plate cut with a smaller hole in the middle and put in between ur flange where the exhaust bolts together ... just dont rev the car to hard cause ur restricting the exhaust a fair bit or chicken wire and steel wool does the job also as long as it wont come flying out mid test lol

This will actually work, but don't any smaller than 2" for the internal hole. Won't affect performance for the purposes of the test.
'wraith' im not an idiot because they both work and it means he can put em in , pass the test n then take em back out because like he said his exhaust isnt that loud to start with, so why waste money buying a new exhaust or welding in hot dogs if he dosnt hafta and u can still rev the car at 3500 with either in u just cant go out n thrash it
I know it works but if you have to resort to those tactics to pass a test then your better off making it legal.

fair enough i agree but if hes stuck and needs a quick fix to get his car home then they work well
I agree also. Although 4 db is just petty.

When this happened to me I went to the bloke who fitted the system and had him install a 2nd hand rear muffler off a v6 and weld flanges on both the v6 and the real muffler so I could swap it out easy in 10 minutes. If you try with a bodge more bodgey than this you probly wont get away with it, any place that does epa tests has seen it all before and won't want to risk their epa license. Obviously you're going to have to put 2 mufflers on but you should get away with $200 or so. There are different places in vic that do epa tests, I don't know about NSW but have a look around for reccomendations before picking one, some are arseholes who just want to sell you a new exhaust and couldn't give a crap how your car runs after. I'm thinking of a particular place in melbourne where I went first up and the guy revved the ring out of my car rather than use the epa guideline for rpm. Later I found out a few mates had been warned off this bloke. (Also told me that the exhaust place that fitted it had gone bankrupt, I phoned them in front of him and embarrassed the shit out of him. Still had to pay him for the test but. Obviously if you get two 2nd hand mufflers put on and some flanges for easy swapsies don't get it done where you're getting tested. good luck bloke.

and some how harleys are legal... Id like to see a cops balls shrink trying to pull over a bikie and noise test him!!
