got knocked for road worthy because of lining, other than what is original what can i get away with putting in instead?
There are some on eBay.. How bad is yours? Rare spares should have them too
the liner is in good condition,i want to know what i can glue to it besides the foam backed material that is standard issue?
Thumb tack it up? It's something like 120 to be fixed in sedan, about 240 for wagon.
With great cars, comes great drivers.
there's a thread around here somewhere showing how to replace the roof lining, i guess if it's a rush job to get a roadworthy done you could just remove the felt and foam and leave the cardboard in, fairly messy cleanup.. would look ugly but it's not falling down restricting your vision then.
Bought a VR Acclaim recently and getting it ready for roadworthy. There is no roof lining at all, even the cardboard and the felt is missing (someones unfinished project). Thats one of the things he wants replaced.. its not there, it cant be restricting vision lol.. seems stupid to me but he wants it restored.
I've removed the cardboard from the other car for now (headliner also sagging) and redone it with some foam from clark rubber, and some rubber backed curtain material for new headliner. Spray-on Kwik Grip worked well for gluing it back up, and its not very messy or bright yellow like normal Kwik Grip so I think its pretty suitable.
Of course, I have used rubber backed material so I know the glue wont show through, but even with the old liner I dont think the glue would bleed through or be visible. It has a very light tacky feel, not liquid at all, and it sprays on almost invisible. Seems pretty strong dry, and it said it could take high temperatures on the can. It took me 2 large cans @ $16 each at Bunnings.
ahh, ok, thought it was the typical lining sagging problem, it'll be knocked due to being bare metal and may be deemed dangerous with sharp edges you may cut yourself on and if you hit it in an accident it won't absorb like the soft roof lining, bit of a joke as that'd be the least of your worries but they're the rules the government has deemed necessary to keep us all safe. same thing as if you don't have a stereo in the dash but an open hole, might get your hand stuck in there while driving so it's classed as unroadworthy.
i think the how to thread also mentions it's not worth trying to recycle the old lining, by the time you clean all the glue and old foam off by washing it'll shrink and no longer fit
Whoops thought you ment bonnet when you said hood.. My roof liner sageed so I took it out and cleaned the old foam off with a wire brush and use a tin of glue where you paint both sides, wait till tacky and stick together..

thanks heaps to all who sent me ideas, like the clark rubber hint, was having trouble where to find foam in a sheet, will have a go at it myself,so i can get areal loud colour.
I dont know what state you are in but I had to get a car blue slipped for it`s first rego and it had no interior at all, all it had was front and back seat.
At first the guy was not going to blue slip it because he said that it is not allowed and he could lose his rego licence.
He umed and ared for a while and decided to ring the RTA, the inspector he spoke to said to go and open his book at such and such a page and said read that and tell me where it says that it is illegal to have no interior.
He went through it with th RTA inspector and the inspector said that it is not against regulations in NSW to not have any interior.
Needless to say my car was blue slipped and I was out of there in about another 10 minutes.
By the way the rego guy thanked me and said that he had knocked back a few cars for that same reason so now he knows he can pass them.
So if you are in NSW I would pull it out and if he knocks you back tell him to ring the RTA and ask them casue he will find out he is wrong.
seeing this thread isn't that old i'll add some more info.
got knocked on a roadworthy in vic today for the factory option sagged roof lining, i'd used 5 pop rivets with washers to hold the lining back to the cardboard backing (as a tide over till i get around to repairing properly)
using anything metal, screws, staples, thumb tacks is not an acceptable repair method... i have gotten away with this in the past but apparently all the rule changes have just made it harder to get away with all this and they have to take photos and send them into vicroads
Removing the sagged lining and just having the cardboard is fine.... if it wasn't for all the old foam and the mess it would make i would've done this before taking it in for a roadworthy check.
