cut down version: testing done on cold engine.
cheap vn/vp engine, tested it before stripping, 2 cylinders down on compression, 1 @ 90 psi, 1 @ 100, rest 145-150ish
added oil into the cylinders down and the 100 stayed the same, 90 came upto 140
started on an engine stand (lh mode, no o2 etc, run many engines like this to test)
fired easily, ran rough (wrong key in the cam sprocket/balance shaft gear, moving back n forth n chewed a chunk out of the cam explains the rough running)
stripped down, no lip (bores glazed), bearings barely even marked, genuine std gm.
heads look fine, no recessed valves, black from running rich previous life, not the 20 seconds i had it running.
dropped pistons out, 2 suspect cylinder, 120 psi, rings were lined up incorrectly with the gap being inline for upper & lower
90 psi that revived with oil had the end gaps about 10mm offset to each other.
all rings have worn fairly evenly, all measure approx 2-32thou at 2 positions in their bores, 10 thou over the spec max
my question is has anyone else come across this?
can it really roll out of the factory like this, all other signs point to genuine gaskets and sealant, no marks on bolts from previously being undone/done up except the timing cover, chain tensioner and wrong locating key.
Pistons still have the cast marks/grooves on the skirts and sfa wear on the thrust side
bored not tapered and still round
journals as round as the day they were ground....
From the wear and color inside it looks like it's done 150,000 kms if not less. The chances of the rings moving and lining up perfectly are minimal.
Anyone else think it was built by an apprentice on a friday right before beer/knock off time?
