hey guys,
i have a vn hsv svle (v8 5 speed). the other day i went to the servo to fuel up and pump up my tyres. when i left, the engine check light was on, the car started running like crap, didnt want to rev and stalled at every stop. i left it for about an hour, then started it up again. it will start no problem, but then has a hard time holding a level idle (keeps "hunting"). i also noticed it is alot louder (zorst), backfires alot and has a burning smell from somewhere (engine light still on).
i started trying to fix it at the exhaust, as i thought it could be a blocked cat, but thats all fine, and keeps running the same with only the extractors attached.
i then did a dionastic check using the paper clip trick. it turned up error code 51 (memcal issue), so i removed the ecu, pulled out the memcal, and then put it all back together. started the car and it run as it would if i had disconected then reconnected the battery (which i did while pulling out the ecu), no engine light, happy to rev. left it to find idle for 5 mins, then the engine light came back on, and the issue came back. error code 51.
i am a firefighter, and so i need this car running asap.
any help as to how to fix this problem would be great.
cheers luke.
replace the memcal with another, if the fault persists replace the ecu.
if you've got a fine tip soldering iron, pop the blue cap off the memcal and look to see if there's a dodgy solder joint on the bigger chip with the silver sticker.
it's running in limp mode with the light on, default basic timing and fueling, if you're stuck and have to drive that's exactly what it's for, instead of disabling the car it's still kinda driveable.
ok, thanks mate. is there any special memcal/ecu i need to run? (does it need to be vn? v8? manual? hsv?)
yeah it has to be a vn/vp v8 manual memcal, if you can't find a hsv one a stock one will run, just be down on power, but at least it'll be driveable
(if it's your ecu and your memcal is fine then you can run that)
any VN/VP v6 or v8 ecu will work, just needs the v8 manual memcal in it, look for 1227808 on the sticker of the ecu.
VR V6 & V8 manual and VS V8 manual ecu's will work also with the VN V8 memcal part # 16183082 or 16206305 (usually little more expensive than vn/vp, they look basically the same as the VN in size)
JE & JD camira is also a 1227808, once again swap the memcal and you're off
There are other out there that are also compatible but out of the above you should be able to find something.
The camira and v6 ecu's are generally cheaper cause they don't carry a v8 branding mark on them.
VR & VS auto & VS v6 ecu's will not work at all

Replaced ecu with a vp v6 auto item, fitted with my vn v8 man hsv memcal... Works a treat, better then ever.
Cheers, Luke.
