On the VP if I ever accidentally leave the handbrake on and drive off, after maybe 5 or 10 metres or so something makes a loud bang underneath the car somewhere. Never had any other kind of car do this. Anyone else's C'dore do this too?
What made me bring this up is the handbrake got adjusted today and then I was going down the freeway at 100 and went over a bump and the back wheel being jiggled was enough to make this bang noise happen again. Gave me a real fright because I also had the wheel bearings done today too and the diff drained and refilled and I thought the diff might have busted somehow. Stopped and got going again and there was an occasional noise then on the return trip of some 60 km not a peep out of it so I dunno.
did you have your hand brake shoes replaced? maybe the lining of the shoes have separated and pieces are flying around under the hub.... just spit balling here....
dont sweat the petty... pet the sweaty...
Nah, but they did say there was this missing return spring that they replaced.
Reckon I'll let them know then see how it goes.
Bloody cars!
Maybe if they were left on, the shoes moved with the rotating force and moved forward on their pivots until they couldnt go any further and then sprung back......but a loud bang is a worry

id say cable hitting the floor is the noise after ya drive with it on it pulls it tight wen it gets to a point it flexes the cable and thats the noise under the car maybe wen the adjusted it it stuck on a tad and thats why it made the noise wen ya hit the bump.
Forgetting to remove the handbrake...

I think Clutchy is on the money.
I think the globe on your dash that lights up the (P) must be blown...
The globe is okay, just the handbrake doesn't grip that well, and/or the mighty 304 just doesn't notice. Consequently I don't notice for 5 or 10 metres then BANG!
That's retarded, the hand brake inside the rear disk looks like this
(-o-) when the hand brake is pulled it looks like this (---o---), there is no way for the rotational force to cause the cable to bind or flex.
The shoes more than likely are catching at a point then snapping back as they bind up, Ive had this on several cars before when pulling the hand brake during a corner... :P
Nothing serious to worry about aslong however you can adjust the shoes to account for wear on the hub and the shoe, this will give the hand brake less room to move around and give you a firmer feel through the hand brake.. (it should be done when changing rotors)
Please remember to disengage the hand brake when taking off in the future.
My friends legnum (galant wagon import ) did this. He had to lube the handbrake cable regularly to stop it. Eventually he got a new handbrake cable and it didn't come back.
quick fix for that legnum problem is buying a car that isnt a piece of shit![]()
I've had the assy tumble inside the rotor on me twice in 10 years.
Not having them adjusted properly allows them to rattle and vibrate inside your rotor bell. Eventually a spring pop's off and the extra movement snaps the centre mount pin and then you wind up with a mess in there, the spreader bar on both cases looked like a lump of playdoh with the rest a mangled mess of metal.
Pull your rotors and make sure everythings set nicely how it should be. Trust me, most places you go nowadays either have no idea on the bits for early park brake assy's or just plain dont have em. (well i tried everyone round the central coast nov last year and wound up having to steal the bit's off a spare diff to get me up and running again)
When it last happened, i swore it was the centre bearing hitting the floor from how it sounded and felt with the bangs, rattles and vibrations.
