Hi, im new to this forum and i was wondering if anyone can help me. I have just rebuilt my first 304 iv just built a standard motor apart from putting in a stage 1 cam, i installed the distributor and set up timing and engine is back in the car i have hooked everything up and i have tried starting it and it fires but only when the throttle is open and it wont rev past 1000 rpm and wont ilde, and its getting fuel, spark, and air. Any info would be great. Cheers
Sounds like either the timing is out or you have a vacuum leak.
Are all the hoses connected?
Oh, did you get a tune to suit the cam?

Yeh im sure i got the cam time right ill double check the distributor and all the vacuum lines. Do u rekon it could be the throttle position sensor or map sensor. Thanks for the help mate
Are you getting any error codes? The sensors will throw codes. Don't forget to set your timing in Diagnostic mode (this will also show you any error codes).
How do i set the timing in diagnostic mode
Under the steering wheel there is a diag plug (DON'T lower the fuse door), on the top row the pins you need are the furthest to the right hand side.
Now start your the engine with the timing light and this will show number 1 firing
The correct stock setting for a 5 Liter is 10 BTDC. have a look at your harmonic balancer and see where your TDC mark is. You will see letters A and R, (the long line between them is TDC) as well has a mark below the A.
Each mark on the engine is 2 Degrees so you need to turn your distributor so that the light goes on at the long mark below the A, this is 10 BTDC.
I havent run my cam in yet will that affect it at all, and the i dont think the vq has a diagnostic plug i dont recall seeing one
Most important to put it into diagnositc mode to set the timing, will make a huge difference and hopefully fix your issues.
Thanks for the info mate
