hey guys i have a 90 model vn the motor has a knockin noise but mainly when in gear i changed the tensioner pully n found where the pully slides on it was broken so i changed it still the noise is there ive been told to change the harmonic balancer will this help also does the harmonic balancer fit of a 96 model ecotec motor as i have a full motor sittin ere going to waste any help would b good as im sick of the car soundin like a truck cheers also when car is idlin the tensioner pully is bouncin up n down pretty bad cheers
you need to locate where the noise is coming from, it could be anything.. harmonic balancer, balance shaft bearing, timing chain tensioner, water pump even.
Auto or manual? it could also be something to do with the flywheel/flex plate, clutch/torque converter.... or something else.
it could wind up being very expensive if you replace everything without diagnosing it properly first and just randomly replacing bits.
the ecotec hb will fit but is not designed for the engine and you'll most likely end up with balancing issues in the engine.
you are better off replacing it with the correct one for your model engine if it is the culprit.
yeah its auto so when i listen it sounds like its comin from front of motor but is hard to tell but its real noisey up top near alternater and the tensioner also just noticed that if i rev it up a bit on idle its no where near noisey
can you film it and post it online? try using a piece of garden hose as a stethoscope, put 1 end to your ear and the other to different parts of the engine, may help to narrow down where the noise is coming from (be careful when near the spinning parts n belt though)
you could remove the belt and start the car, don't run it for a long time, 1-2 minutes maximum to help rule out power steering pump, alternator and water pump.
yeah i will try that and yeah i will see if i can film it and post it thanks mate
yeah jxw took belt off and rattle was not there also noticed hb wobbled a fair bit
How does the hb look, is the rubber perished, cracked and split? as the hb is still spinning with no belt it should generally make the same noise, but it won't hurt to check everything else and rule them out.
with the belt off, check the alternator drive pulley and see if it moves laterally left and right, push it away from you (towards the windscreen) and then towards you, see if the is any movement, also rotate/spin it, does it feel like it's binding or grabbing? or is there no movement and it rotates freely?
Do the same to the water pump. Repeat again with the p/steering pump and aircon pump.
If they all turn freely and have little movement, replace the hb and see how it goes.
yeah no worries i'll have a look thanks heaps mate
