reason, your killing your gearbox, stop driving it like a manaul, you wanna drive it like a manual put a stage 2 shift kit in it, if it's a stock auto, dont drive it like that,
it wont change from 2nd to 3rd cause you are revign the snot out of the car, you change gears it will snap your gearbox, its' a fail safe within the gearbox, they all have it

you can NOT kill your trans by changing manually. if you could, you wouldn't have the stick in the first place.
Your problem is (i'd assume) not enough fluid in the box, or you've boiled it.
With the stalling thing, that could be your idle has been set too low, and when you first put it in gear, the revs drop lower, hence the stalling.

ive found from 2 to 3rd wen around 4700 as thats the best time, shift the stick up, drop throttle then hit it again really fast, it allows it to shift then engage safely with out damage, and ulll find u wont loose any speed, if u use it like a manual, shift like a manual, wen manuals shift u hit the clutch and release throttle then drop clutch and hit throttle again...
so if ur consisting on driving like a manual drop ur throttle,
and to u purple monkey, autos arnt meant to be used like a manual, other wise u would only have manuals, first on the auto is used f or hard hill climbs or towing, along with second, thats wat its there for and not for manual users. so im sorry but garth is right.
so just treat ur auto easy, well wen i say easy, i mean back off to change, it will only take a split second, that way u will get 10 or 20 or 30 years from ur auto and not 5

Hey guys im havin same sorta problems with my gearbox, 92 VP wagon. like king said, sometimes when i go into gear to take off it stalls, my car revs high in idle but i rekon if i put the idle any lower, it wont idle. When i shift into drive it takes about 3 seconds to actually kick in. A problem i had was that my radiator was leaking water into the gear box oil !! i saw the oil on the radiator cap and thought my mum put the oil in the wrong place. Yeah so the mecahnic put soe additive in he rekons will fix the problems caused by the water. i got a new radiator of course. but yeah should i get a new gearbox?

My VN V6 I used to for mucking around, rev the car right out in 2nd gear. (used to get up to 140kph) then change into 3rd manually.
But I wouldn't go manually changing all the time.

My dads told me that because my car idles too high the pressure in the gearbox is to high? thats why it takes so long to kick in. If i cant adjust the idle wat can i do?

thats true, it will be harder to get into gear, but only from n or p to drive or reverse, high idle wont effect ur 1 - 2 - 3 - 4.
if u cant get it too idle lower take it to some one who can

No, your instructor tells you thats whats its for. But next time your sitting at the traffic lights, leave the car in D, and count how many gears she changed thru, i garuntee you it'll go 1, 2, D. Of course the torque range is better in the lower gears, but using the stick, or leaving it in drive is no different.

exept you can shift when you want to not when the car wants to... i know that defeats the perpose of an auto but, meh, i dont care i still shift
