I have read a few of the posts on this site and have seen this topic heaps so figured I would contact you guys and see if you could help me.
I have been getting a ticking noise from my VN....it stops when I get the revs up a little bit, and i also took the belt off that goes around the alternator, aircon, power steering and all of that....and started her up...NO Tick?!?!
I guessed it was the pulley on the timing thing first so I replaced it, then replaced the power steering pump but guess what....it still ticks!
I am a novice at this, but love to give it a go. "Teach a man to fish..."you know.
Any suggestions welcome. Please help![]()
Thanks
my bros VP makes the same noise, i was told it was ither the tensioner pulley bearings or the transpump bearings
you started it up without the belt...wtf!
lol,anyway...as you'll probably read in many threads on the site the main culprits for that tick are usually the harmonic balancer or the water pump.
you'll probably be able to see which one is stuffed just by looking at them when the cars running, because they will have a little wobble (thats whats causing the tick sound as the belt goes around).
or it could be sticky injectors, thats what my ticking is. you can just go get em cleaned but eh, i can only hear it if i stand near the engine bay - and i cant say i do that too often as i'm driving

from what your explaining to me...it's only the natural ticking of the fuel injectors which is normal
sticky injectors? that ticking is the injector pintle slamming against it's seat as it shuts. if they were sticky, they wouldnt make that noise now, would they?Originally Posted by habro

most ticking issues are from the valve train i would expect that like alot of other people your lifters are a bit sticky... hence the reason the ticking goes away when reved up a bit. its not really anything worth getting worried about but if you want to replace them then theres 12 at around $25 -$30 each making the total price easily $300 just in parts not including gaskets
get your self a piece of hose and try to locate the where the sound is strongest
also if you car ticks and you let it warm up and the noise goes away its definatley the lifters as they shut up once oil gets up there (wich isnt instantanious)
im not admiring your car im looking in disgust
The noise does go away after I give her some revs...but as soon as I let her drop to an idle...the ticking comes back.Originally Posted by HDT_aero
And YES....it is quite a strong tick...almost a bang.![]()
If the water pump was faulty...wouldnt it affect the running temp of my VN. We are having some warm days here on the Gold Coast and she is running pretty fine....havent gone over halfway even after sitting for 20mins with aircon on, waiting for the missus to grab some groceries...hehehehe....
Have a nice day all!![]()
And I forgot to say thank you for all your help and comments. The only thing I can do is guess..."I guess it is that? "
With all of your help I know that I will be able to isolate the problem and get to the bottom of the ticking. I already have found out how to get my Odometer going and only been a member not even 24 hours.....![]()
Merry Christmas all.
aero could still be right, if you let your car come back down to idle and it starts again, oil could be bleeding out of your lifters
Lifters wont stop ticking with the belt off though. I would try & isolate where the noise is coming from with a piece of hose like aero suggested. Even pull the belt off again & rotate the alternator, water pump, tensioner etc & see if you can feel a hard spot.
wouldnt doing that screw your timing up? or is that only on older cars? i know when dads belt snapped and he tried starting his car his timing got screwed, but that was like a 79 cortina
He was talking about the serpentine belt not a timing belt.
i reckon it's the tensioner![]()
yeah taking the belt off would still allow the lifters to work because he didnt take off the timing belt, if he did the car wouldn't start at all. that was a good idea from vt1538, take the belt off again and turn the pulleys and see if you can feel something wrong
my web sitestuff on the XF throttle body conversion, calais interior and lots of other junk!
I went don't the strip and ever since I have a tick under acceleration, started around 3k rpm, now around 2-2 1/2k rpm. I've checked exhaust gaskets, cat gaskets, and checked alternator, water pump, power steering pump, idle pully!!!!
Anyone got an ideas? the higher the revs the louder it gets, sounds tinny, and definalty in the engine bay. But if you hold it at say 3k rpm, it slowly goes away, put your foot down, and it comes back, mainly in all gear but
1st, unless at 4k rpm.
It really got me screwed, and is also F***ing annoying
i wont tolerate cretins aiming to cause problems here at jc and nor will i hesitate to let the moderators know

its noisey lifters, they can get clogged with crap making it harder for the oil to flow through, either take them out and replace them, or attempt at cleaning them
