Default did i collapse my steering column?? bosskit wont fit!

    Hello there!!

Im new in here, I have a VN V6 1990 exec. its taken over 2 weeks to find a 510c autotechnics bosskit for my sportsline steering wheel. Only to find that after HOURS of getting the original steering wheel off that the boss kit wont fit. It wont go all the way down the spline!! Have I collapsed my steering column?? can this be fixed..... took welding on two huge bolts onto my original wheel to fit a metal puller to get it off and now I am driving around with no horn button!!

Did you use any hammering force on the shaft, otherwise you shouldn't have broken the shaft. If you have broken it, the only way to fix it. Is to replace it.
Are the splines on the shaft all straight. Make sure they aren't burred.
You would want to make sure that the boss is correct. Try putting the original steering wheel back on to see if if goes on okay. Now that the steering wheel has been taken off. It shouldn't be too hard to put back on and taken off.
    Yours Kindly,
    Jim

Cause a so called VN expert from a parts place mucked me around with ordering in the wrong ones over and over ... My original wheel fits back on but the backing plastic bit that hits the horn leaver seems to not fit too well. getting a mechanic to check under the car to see if I can adjust the steering column today. The splines are fine. Might go to another accessories store and try again... ALL I WANT IS A SMALLER STEERING WHEEL DAM IT.. IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK!! LOL.

Why did it take hours to remove the steering wheel? If you have hit the shaft directly with a hammer, chances are the shaft may have collapsed. Expensive pain in the butt lesson!

well saw another similar thread and madhouse_Dave reckons i can go under the care and using a spanner undo the knuckle that holds the steering shaft to teh power steering rack , once this is loose then go back into the steering wheel and pull the shaft back up to where you need it to sit.. Once this is in a good spot go outside to the steering rack and knuckle and tighten the bolt back up again making sure its nice and firm???

is all of the spline sticking out? if so then put the boss kit on MAKE SURE THE GROVES ARE LINED UP then get a bit of pipe that is bigger than the shaft and put it on the boss kit and give it a little tap to make it sit all the way down. BUT MAKE SURE THAT THE GROVES LINE UP OR YOU WILL F**K THE BOSS KIT AND THE SHAFT

you will know if steering wheel is collapsed, odviously if the wheel was on,there would be noises coming from the bottom of steering column where the collapsable bearing is,and there would be heaps of movement up and down motion if you grabbed the wheel and pulled on it.you can get an idea if it's collapsed with out the wheel, just grab hold of the spline with your hand and push down and pull up,or even see if it wobbles just by grabbing it,there will be a small amount of movement, but not a lot.

tried that no movement what so ever. got the bosskit from supercheap a 510c for my sportsline steering wheel. Just went and had another go, seems that there is a 15mm extra gap before it starts going into the spline on the bosskit. Definately not the right one as there is also a bit of play on the boss kit when it does go on the spline. HMMMM! Will have to go back to the shop AGAIN! tomorow. Poor manager is sick of seeing me. Or maybe he mucks me around so that I have to go back in there. LOL Thanks for all the advice guys. Will keep ya posted on the final outcome!

    Cool

    Hi Misslisa
let us know how you go. I had pushed down when using a hammer to release
the wheel from the column so hard that I had pushed it down a long way.
I was in a panic untill I looked underneath and saw that I had some way to
loosen it up and get some of the shaft back. it worked well for me. I hope
the Boss kit works out for you.

Ps It was nice to see people where able to use something I posted up.
It makes you feel good about giving :-)
