Dude don't do it.. unsafe and illegal... just get new springs/shocks. It might not save any cash but it may well save your life.

Actually, if you're going to lower the back past FE2 height you'll need shortened shocks to make sure you don't drop a spring out. To keep the car legal the spring must be captive through the entire range of wheel travel that the car has got, and that includes having the wheel off the ground. If you can turn the spring, it's considered illegal.

Not to mention that if you lower it past FE2 without getting shortened shocks you run the risk of the shocks bottoming out and that's just fkn messy.

yer i read that about the springs, they must not be able to move when completely relaxed or sumthing like that.. im not quite sure what fe2 height is, im assuming that covers puuting super lows on correct? with some race bikes it was possible to have a suspension travle adjuster, to limit the travel of the shocker, is there an alternative similar to this? or am i better off hunting down some cheap shortened shocks? SPEAKING OV WHICH IF ANYBODY WANTS TO SELL ME SUM!! even if there half rooted, im just in it for the eye candy, untill i start working again..
    Cheers

If you're going to do your suspension, do it right first time. Suspension is like tyres, if you can't afford to get good stuff, don't get anything. Put in crappy shocks and you're only going to find that it handles like crap and is fairly unsafe to drive. Save your money and get a good set of the shortened gas shocks from Monro.

From memory FE2 height is a 1" (25mm) drop from standard 4wd height in the VN's.

Default I just lowered mine myself! with a mate

Not that hard if you have time on your hand!
We took 4 hours to do the fronts, as it was trial and error as we never did this before, but we managed. The rears are not hard at all!

I fitted Lovell springs up front and rear and KYB Excell-G shocks and struts all round! It looks unreal!
HOWEVER!!!!!!!!!!!! I ended up with one small problem, and no its not the 20" rims rather the rear is sitting on the bump stops, as its too low!

So, just a question? what do I do now? do I cut them or remove them? Anyone know?

You can pick up shortened bumpstops from most suspension places. I think that cutting them is actually illegal. Though I could be wrong.

Whatever you do, don't remove them, otherwise if by some chance you do bottom out, you'll have metal on metal, and that's one hell of a thump.

i guess if your gonna cut your springs you may as well do the following performance mods

    remove the seatbelts
put fuel tank in the boot (take up smoking while your at it)
    disable the speedo
remove steering wheel and use a spanner
take seat out and use a milk crate
replace all windows with glad wrap
and while yoru att it remove headlight's and replace them with dolphin torches

cutting springs is highly illegal in any state and teritory in this country. you cut your springs you alter the handling of the car, nto to mention you make it 100% illegal,

as it's been stated before, if you cant afford the top stuff dont do it. save up and have it done by a pro. ask any suspension shop, cutting springs is illegal

pfft, my tintings illeagal, my brakelights are illeagal, driving with my neons on is illeagal, blue parkers are illeagal... taking a piss on a tree AND smoking at a bus stop is illeagal. i dont wanna sound like a smart ass but pretty much anything u do to a car is illeagal and unsafe, otherwise wed just go out and buy a stock monaro and drive that around like a 60 y.o. bloke thats tryna b kool. im not saying that spring cutting is safe but either is riding a bike without a helmet. so many people do it, pretty much everyones awair of the risks so dont attack people for wanting the cheap way out, we cant all afford $700 suspension packs! my dads been cutting his springs for years, since his first dodge ute to his newest xr6 and hes fine with it.

You can piss on any tree you want, just not in a public place like a town park : ) or other public places like on the wall of the pub. I really think anything that goes against core human nature like running around nekked or sexing where ever the need arises or peeing on stuff should ever be illegal and it's not in alot of more sensible countries but I'm not the Prime Minister, Cutting springs on the other hand could hurt another person besides yourself so that's ok to have a fine attached

    lol @ foamy

ok, keesh, sounds like the things illegal with your car arent significant enough to make risk of killing yourself or others higher, except maybe brakelights, what are they tinted?

cutting springs on the other hand will make your car drive differently and can kill you if they fall out while on the move and you hit something at high speed or another car.

your dad cut springs on his new xr6, ok, now i see where you ge it from, tell him hes a dick head. honestly, if you can afford an xr6, you can afford to get lowered springs, i earn stuff all a week and did it legally, come on. its not a full on setup, supers on front, lows on rear(still gotta get supers) and short shocks all round. i saved up and did it properly, do the same. i know im never gonna get done for it.

riding a bike with no helmet is like not wearing a seatbelt, doing dodgy welds on a set of forks is like cutting springs, its gonna wreck your bike and mess you up.

^^Agreed, I had cut springs in my sigma,... thats 1 reason why I no longer have it. Crashed into a stoby pole going round a corner, front wheels hit the centre strip and car bounced up springs fell out of place and I spun uncontrollably into the pole. Was lucky no-one was hurt. So I'd Highly Recommend not cuting yer springs!

your spring is designed to handle X amount of weight per coil, you takje out a coil and the others jhave to pick up the weight, hence taking them past their safe working limit. however you'll find springs on ebay for about 220 and about 100 for rear shortend shocks, 320 and a few hours of rewarding work, priceless
