put a multimeter on the battery
    car off should be ~12.5v
    car on should be ~14.5v
leave multimeter on when starting watch voltages drop while cranking

it should be 13-13.5 all round,it only drops when motor actually running ,to 12 volts, this is how you tell a dicky battery, anything below 12 while motor running indicates a problem.

batteries will drop to anything around 8volts sometimes when cranking on most vehicles. but running the car should be around 13.8-14.4.

lol, didnt read samuels post properly first, thought he said cranking at 12volts, but running at 12 volts? wtf? that there is sign of an alternator not working. mine runs at 12-13 volts when car is off, and goes to 13.8 when idling. which is the norm.
