Default When does your fan come on?

I noticed my VN has started to overheat a bit recently. For the last year since I got it the temp gauge would never get near the second bar. Now it goes right up to the third one(half way) before the fan turns on and cools it down. Is that normal? When should the fan come on?

DO you think it could be the weather? Bloody hot lately and it has effected my car the same as yours has.. Just check coolent, flush if its it only water and chuck some real stuff in it. Clean the front of the radiator could hav collected tonn of bugs or watever restricting air flow. If all this is fine then it could be faulty thermostat.

p.s you really should of searched this topic im sure theres heaps about it

replace your coolant temp sensors they cost $25 and control the temp at wich your fan comes on... its about that age for them to be going.. failing that your guage temp sensor may be playing up they cost $10 and both are simple screw out and screw in replacement... even on a s1 they are a 5 min job to replace simply with the right spanner
im not admiring your car im looking in disgust

on my vn, the fan comes on right after it goes a tad over the 3rd line. Then it shuts off as soon as it goes below the 3rd line. Does this a few times in the hot weather.

Mine has always gotten up to about half way before the fan has cut in. I'm not too worried, because it gets up there, click, the fan cuts in and a few minutes later it's back down one bar on the gauge.

If it gets higher than half way then it might be time to look into it, but I'd say just let it be.

thats probably because your thermostat is stuck open.

Ok that seems normal then if most people's goes up to about half way, maybe it was overcooling before ha ha! If it starts to go any higher I'll look into replacing the temp sensors.

I didn't think the weather would effect it that much?

It does. Instead of having say 20 degree air coming into the front of the car while driving, which cools the radiator, you have 35 degree air, it makes a huge difference.

Or maybe your temp gauge is sticky and the needle can't go any higher. Mine used to be like that until I cleaned it up a bit.

if you have the air conditioner on, the fan is always on regardless of the temperature. this would explain why for some people the car hardly gets higher than the first couple bars.

in my VS on a hot day she'll go up to 3/4! system has been flushed etc...
I believe my low speed on my fan is not working i.e put your ac on and low speed fan should come on..

    I don't think the VN's / VP's had a two speed fan though...

anyone know about getting your low speed fan setting to work again?

(if vn's didn't have two speed fan forgive me for hijacking this thread!)

i thought its better for your car to be running at middle temperature rather than always on cold, i havnt had time to sit and wait for the car to overheat, and check the fan. as long as your car doesnt overheat then i spose ur alright. mines only ever heated up to below the halfway mark, but i only started driving recently.. i dunno why they dont hav the fan run off the timing belt and hav it always on:S
Don't blame me, It's that damn percadan..

Do the V8 have the fan on 24/7? The staty looks like the fan is connected to the drive belt
