    Default VP Gearbox issues

Hi, just bought a 1990 VP series 2. The gearbox has got issues, jsut wanted to know if anyone knew how bad the problem is and if i can repair it rather than buying a new one. For starters, ive been reading around and ive read that its not good if you put it into gear from P, and it takes over 1 second and clunks and jerks the car, i dont know why this is bad or what this means, but my car does it, does anyone know what this problem means. Secondly when i drive the car itll get to about 50k's in 2nd and lose power at the wheels and rev up, just as if you put your clutch in on a manual car and keep the gas on. Any ideas anyone?

From that description, it sounds like your auto is slipping... and that can mean big $$$ in repairs....

hey, i had the first issue, try some Lucas Auto Trans Stop Shudder. worked for me, its around $18 and u heat it up and put it into the tranny, ive got no idea how to do it as i didnt do it, just got the trans serviced,

    when u say u get to 50k's in 2nd u mean 50km? or 50km/h

does it do it everytime or just sometimes? if it does it everytime its not good...

but from the sounds of it the transmission just needs a good service.. and maybe a bit more

maybe one of the other guys can help u out on the rest

    its done 260,000k's

hey yeah, ive only taken the car up the road once coz its unrego' a the moment and it did what i said, but the girl i bought it off said that it only did it every now and again and gradually got worse to the point she couldnt drive it anymore. i got another gearbox but its the wrong one, its the 1HMD and the one i need is 2HMD. So if someone wants to buy that one they can, just pm me. ill do it at a reasonable price. make an offer. but yeah it would only get to about 50km/h in second and rev out...

    Default Transmission Problem

Just a though, first how many kilometres has the car done and has the transmission been serviced. I have nearly 300000 ks on my VP and we just drove from Darwin to Melbourne pulling a trailer with the bike and tools etc with no problems whatsoever.
Usually changing the oil and filter with an additive as suggested by a previous post will help prevent the slipping and the tranny may last another couple of months, but do the easy things first.

The cars got about 350000 on the clock, the car was serviced regularily but im not sure about the gearbox. The car was used out near Greenbank and has country miles on it, meaning the car wasnt drivn like a city car (stoppin and starting all the time, the way that kills a car). I'll probly just get someone to look at it and ask for their opinion after they drive it and see if its worth putting the service kit thru it i have or just getting a new box. Thanks to everyone who tried to help, really appreciate it.

I don't know if anyone has asked, but have you checked the transmission fluid level lately?

    It must be a VN series 2 if it's a 1990 model

    Default Finally fixed it

I changed the oil, and sprayed the filter out to clean it a bit, since the filter i got in the service kit was the wrong one, put on the new gasket to keep that nice new oil in there and now it runs fine. Amazing isnt it, and here i was thinkin i had to go get another $500 gearbox.. My mates Vp Gearbox has just done the seals and he drives it around with oil pissing out everywhere, it drips str8 onto the exhaust so he leaves a big smelly white trail of smoke behind him as he goes. Since his box has started leakin oil, its been doin the same things as mine (slipping, not changing) so ive concluded that the oil in your auto tranny is very important...

what shi*ts me with autos is they seem to 'lose their tightness' with age...
every mechanic I go to says mines o.k but its definitely not as tight as my mates VT series 11 even though the kays (220,000 are the same) why oh why...
autos are bad enough, then they start to get a slight slippage with age....

at least you guys with VN's VP's don't have to pay quite so much for your gearboxes...

from asking around the wreckers, seems like $350 or so for a Vn / Vp box, twice that for a VS...
then you get one from the wreckers and it still slips a little...doh!

    recondition it???

might cost a bit of money but its sure as hell better than getting another crappy box
or buy a reconditioned gear box

not so they cant guarantee how many kms it has done so i personally would rebuild my own box since you know what you have done to the car it might cost you but it is worth it. Your tvc cable may even be getting stuck
