Anyone know what is involved in changing standard VN dash cluster to the trip computer version. What wires sensors are needed. Is the harness in a SS the same so it can connect straight up?? Any threads on this one.

ok No and No
the ss wont have the wiring needed
there are no extra sensors required
you need to find a calais and cut out the 4th wiring harness tracing each wire as far as possible.
you must find one with the same year model wiring and the dash should be the same (they dont have to be but it makes life 10000% easier when you install it.)
If you have the same series and year stuff then you just tap the 4th connector into the 3 standard dash connectors and just match colour to colour. except for one wire that goes to a connector down near the main computer. (this is for the fuel usage) this is a yellow black wire that goes to nothing (the plug that plugs into that connector is empty.)
now if you dont have the same year/series dash then you can follow the back of the new cluster and compare it against the old one.
you will find with different series dashes that the 3 main plugs will have to be dissasembled and reordered to suit the new cluster.
ive done three now and wouldnt recommend using different modle dashes.
ive found the most annoying part trying to swap models is that apart from more than usual re wiring the trip computer switch can be completely different requiring wires to go where other wires for other things are already (imposible ended up needing to go find the correct modle trip switch to fix it)
after saying that you will need the trip switch out of the calais aswell wich simply runs four wires to the 4th connector but like i said wrong modle and you wont be able to hook up your dome light etc due to conflicting wiring positions and completly different setups... eg one modle has a tap switch for the dome light one has an on off button you must use the one for your modle.
you can find wiring diags here and there but if you trace the labled pcb you cant go wrong where as if you find the wrong modle diagram it wont be right for you.

hey hdt_aero, you seem to know your stuff......
can i ask you a question.....you see my vn calais beeps at me about 20 seconds after i start the car. it does 5 beeps....which i looked up and it's some sort of low fuel warning. Yet the trip computer, shows plenty of distance to go for fuel and the fuel guage is fine as well.
What do you think could cause this?
thanks

i know exactly what it is
i had the same problem and what its saying is you have low fuel... now we both know that you dont so why is this you ask..
now so long as your wiring is correct or it is an original calais this is the problem.
ok what you gotta do to is pull the cluster out and you will see a six pin plug connectiong the trip computer module to the clusters flexible PCB....
now you will fins that where that plug bends over time it has cracked...
get your multimeter and test the connections to determin which ones need repairing.. i found that 4 of mine were up sh*t creek
go down to jaycar and get yourself a conductive silver varnish pen (they cost just under $20) and simply paint over the broken connections, test your work and put it back in

my calais cluster doesnt beep for anything. do you know what could cause that or how i could fix it?
1995 Manual HSV Clubsport
Wade Cam :: 9.2:1 CR :: Pacemaker headers :: Twin 2.5" Exhaust :: VT Brakes
1991 Supercharged VN Berlina
9 PSI SC14 Intercooled :: Genie headers :: Twin cats :: HM Twin 2.25 exhaust :: 3.45:1 LSD
the early modles dont beep but if yours is a beeper then it will either be as i described above or the actual spreaker will need replacing.. its fairly easy to get to inside the cluster not the trip module if i remeber correctly its simply behind the plastic warning light cover in the middle where you would normally have the reset button for an analogue dash.
if you wired the cluster in yourself it may be a few wiring issues
the cluster should normally beep if you
lift the handbrake in motion
go over speed
leave the lights on after turning off the ignition
overheat
and have low fuel low fuel
