    Default timing chain ajustments

hey guys, my engines pining under load,

i believe this is due to the new DFI moduel i fitted (VS tripple coil)

anyway it needs a tune up, is this something i could do and is it hard, also where is the timing chain located????

    Cheers

you do not tune these cars by adjusting the timing chain its all done electronically...

if you have the same memcal as you were using before then id suggest getting your crank angle sensor tested.

the CAS along with the harmonic balancer is how the ems determins the timing position... under no circumstances should the timing chain be moved to any position other than the factory setting... however if your chain tensioner wasnt doing its job properly it could slightly effect timing.

i suggest you start by running a diagnostics test and reporting back with results... if you dont know what one is search for it on here under your appropriate modle section

running VS coils wont cause your car to ping

take out the spark plugs and take off a rocker cover now turn the harmonic balancer left and right and see if there is a slack spot.... eg you can turn it so far with no valve train action.

if there is a slack spot then your tensioner is stuffed.. or your chain is but once you get the front cover off this will be obvious

Have changed many a timing chain on the VN from experience and is not an overly pleasant job. A slack chain can affect ignition timing and as such pinging. Common symptom is at around 1500 - 2500rpm a metallic rattling sound eminates from the bonnet area under acceleration. This is caused by the timing chain tensioner failing and the spring is broken on it. The only remedy is to pull the front timng case off and replace the tensioner. This problem was very common on early VN's and many were replaced under warranty. A few escaped through as owners didnt care or they broke later in life but there is a replacement updated tensioner that needs to be installed in the old ones place. Job should take about 4hrs to complete. But beware I have pulled older timing cases off and all the passages have corroded away through lack of quality coolant. If you find this then new timing case as well is needed and the job becomes alot more expensive!!! My memory thinks there is a kit available from holden to do the complete job including all the gaskets and the updated tensioner assembly (But thats going back many years to my New VN days at GM) Good Luck!!!

any performance increase from the crow timing kits???

i might go to the flog-a-part, find a nice VN and attack it and rip the timing chain off, not to buy it but to learn how to do it and that way if i screw it up it dosnt matter :P

lol it'll have to wait.. picking up a full exhust system for $400 (new oxy sensor, pacemakers, hiflow cat, no resonator)

    she should purrrrr

a tensioner spring will cost sweet fa your chain should be fine

ok ok took it to the mechanics... hes like its ya knock sensor... and hes like its round $500 to fix... you have to remove the intake manifold to get to it and its a real bitch of a job.......

anyway... got the page on how to replace a knock sensor from hackhawk (gregories i think) and its like here it is with a picutre...

its in PLAIN FKN VIEW.... they were trying to rip me off... they're $214 new (genuine) or a fraction of that if they're not

or better yet the $1 ones....
    (flog-a-part)

lol quick fix for now but i dont have money, let-a-lone $500 PFFT
