Default stalling too much!! error 33, 41

    hey guys

my car has been stalling the last couple of nights, first time it was low on fuel ( 10litres ) and the fuel pump i dont think is really working the best. but today it just kind of loss power then stalled and i have just about a full tank of petrol! wat is with the error codes that i am getting?? the racv guy reckons that the ecu was saying that as it had little fuel. also wats the average price for a mechanic to replace the fuel pump?? i would do it myself but dont have the time as im just starting uni.

    cheers

Code 33 is indicating a dodgy MAP sensor.

Code 41 indicates that there is "no crankshaft input signals".

Time for a new crank angle sensor. That will take care of code 41. As for code 33...check the condition of the hoses leading to the MAP sensor, as well as the electrical connection to it.

The RACV dude was yanking your chain about the ecu saying it's low on fuel. The reason it is stalling is because the crank angle sensor is dead. A quick and easy way to test this is next time the engine dies on you, open the bonnet and pour a couple of litres of cold water over the CAS (the little sensor on the passengers side of the largest pully on the front of the engine), then try starting it up again.

Fairly common problem on the VN

yeah i poured some water over it the first time it died, not that much though and it actually start but still stalled when i went to accelerate. and the racv guy got the car going by getting me to crank it, while he was under the fuel tank bashing it with a hammer near the pump. and i did get a whining nosie the other week from the pump. will a fuel presure test tell me if its the pump??

    thanks for the advice

If you've already had the pump 'bashed' once I'm impressed that it's still working at all. Generally when they pack it in, you can bash them once to get it running, and then they never work again.

Based on that, I'd change your fuel pump/filter and CAS. The MAP sensor could just be a bit of a false alarm at the moment. Start with that, and if you still pick up code 33 then do something with your MAP.

Now the CAS is done, it should be much nicer to drive. I take it that it's been working so far?
