Ok first of all I got a Holden 1992 VP commodore. Its done 286557 km’s
Before last night the only problem that I have had was leaking shocks.
I’m about 2000kms over a service. But I been busy the last few weeks so I haven’t had time to get it booked in.
Any way last night I was driving to mates home and I found that when ever I put my foot down a little to get me up a hill or something. The car would shoot up like I had my foot to the floor. I really didn’t think any thing of this.
On my way home im doing about 80km and the car just start reving. I take my foot of the pedal for a few seconds and its fine. After a few mins I start to notice that this keeps happening. Like the gear is slipping in to neutral or something. One min im cruzing then the next min I got no power and my car is just revving until I take my foot of the pedal.
So I pull in to a servo and check the transmission fluid. It’s half empty and it’s clear…. NOT RED. Also my pod air filter had fallen of and was sitting in the original bottom pat of the box.
Any way I top it up hoping it will do the trick
About 20 mins later im nearly home but I can’t go over 40kms coz it keeps reving.
Any one knows what the F*ck is going on…
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks Nick
Slipping clutch maybe?
Hey man, my VP was doing EXACTLY the same thing. Its the gearbox, its old, tired and the bands are worn. If you get to it early enough and change the oil and filter, u may be able to save it, but when it starts doing this it usually means its rooted. I gave mine a service (new oil, and filter) and it came good for a day or 2 then just did it again. Try using an additive that you can find at the auto shop like Autobarn or Supercheap, its some stuff called Anti-Slip or something like that, its in the section with all your Auto trans fluids. If the box isnt too far gone this MAY stop the problem, as it thickens the fluid and will "renew" old bands, all it does it try to stop them slipping. If this doesnt work your going to need another box. Believe me ive been thru it all and looks like im gonna have to get another box. I didnt want to accept it at first but mine was just too rooted to save. After i did the oil change and that, if you baby'd the car really nicely it would go into 2nd but would very reluctantly go into 3rd and if you accelerated too hard itd just rev out til the revs got high enough to kick back to 2nd. Its just no good. Sorry to be the bringer of the shitty news...![]()
just a quick question...whats the colour of your coolant??
...is it red now?
if that was the case then the trans fluid would be green not clear
not really...on a dip stick the watered down trans fluid would look clear(watery).
anyway my whole line of thinking (and im not even sure whether vn's have a trans cooler with the radiator) was that the radiators crapped itself and is leaking coolant into the transmittion via the trans cooler...and without the required lubrication qualities of the trans fluid the trans has crapped itself too....
i dunno, it was just something that i thought of when coiners said his fluid was clear.
try adjusting the bands first? can you do this yourself?what i mean is are you a DIYourselfer with your mechanical repairs?a good indication of a buggered tranny is discolored fluid(usually brown with autos, and have a burnt smell)Originally Posted by COINERS
if it's still red,it MAY just be the bands,as in clear what do you mean clear ? like water?
Adjust the bands??? There is no adjustment for the bands on a T700 auto. Once they get to this stage they have seen their day.Originally Posted by samuels
Save up for a manual conversion. Sounds like the trannie is dying, if not dead already. There's a few good people on here to speak to about the conversion. And you'll have a hell of a lot more fun driving too.
Gravity is proof that nature keeps getting us down.
the fluid is clear with a yellow tinge to it. i toped it up and i think its light red. more a pink.
im gonna change the fluid tonight. and might get some of that anti slip
ill get back to you guys tomoz with how it went
thanks for ya help fellazz

its a light green. as i had to add water to it.....Originally Posted by sircruisealotVS

My VP does the same!!! When i changed the trans fluid, there was friggen radiator fluid in it!! and it had a sorta silvery tinge to it like specs of metal. The sign i got was wen i opened the radiator cap there was a lil bit of oil around the cap i kept cleanin it n it kept appearin, my box is gone and wen it finally shits itself im gettin manual conversion for sure, pick n payless has man converts for like $850!!
in that case id say your coolant could be leaking into the trans cooler..Originally Posted by COINERS
and could very well be why your trans is now playing silly buggers.
ah i think we may be on to something hear :O
thanks sircruisealotVS
I forgot to mention before. I don’t know if this makes any difference. About 2 month ago. I redid my back shocks. As far as I know they are the right shocks.
Any way. Took it for a spin later and there is a vibration noise now. I just assumed we knocked the exhaust and now it’s rattling on the shassy or something. So didn’t think it was too important because im getting a hole new exhaust soon.
I don’t know if that makes any difference. But it sounds like my tires are rubbing. But this sound also happens when im stationary not just driving. At the traffic lights or something like that. But it mostly happens when im in drive.
???????
hmm, could be a busted rubber exhaust mount..they're like $5-10 or something from any of the usual places (autobarn,supercheap..etc.)
would a vr transmission fit in a vp ?

just because its a 1992 VP don't mean it's got a T700 in it now does itOriginally Posted by VN Calais 5.0
The chances of it having anything but a T700 in it are pretty slim considering that is the only transmission they came out with from the factory!! Hence why i said you cant adjust the bands.Originally Posted by samuels
and what if the previous owner thrashed the ring out of it and could only afford the MD 8 autoOriginally Posted by VN Calais 5.0

Thats a big WHAT IF! I think if it didnt have the standard trans in it, i dare say he would have mentioned it. Also the MD8 doesnt have band adjustments either.Originally Posted by samuels

(not you coiners the dude trying to argue a point above)
yes they do.....MD 8's have band adjustmentsOriginally Posted by VN Calais 5.0
*LOL* i know thats a big what if about not having the T700 but it is very possible...but hey at least i'm keeping you revved up huh.
coiners, a VR trans may fit, but they're electronic, not hydraulic, so there'd be some extra mucking round to make it work right, but even so, I don't think the OD will work
why not??there wouldn't be that much mucking aboutOriginally Posted by DSTRBD
