hey, wondering if any1 knows how much work is involved in converting a 202 with a 5speed out of an 87 commie into a 90 commie which has a blown 2L 4cyclinder with a 5speed behind it, i was just bout 2 give my berlina away when my m8 crashd his 87 commie with a good 202 an 5speed, i dnt have much money being a student so if any 1 can help me an give me an idea of the work involve b4 i start it would b mint cheers
alot of work in my books, alot of screwing around putting an older engine into a newer car. Hard to really say if it's worth it.
i got all the tools and the engine and gearbox is bascaly free (a doz), work like changing the mounts ect?
i dont think your actually allowed to put a carbied engine in a car that was bought out with efi???Originally Posted by coopr
something to do with EPA laws
hang on.. 1987.. vl 3.0L. 1990.. vn 3.8L
am i the only one who picked this up..
it would be a complete waste of time putting an rb30 into a vn..
go and buy a motor from the wreckers. it would save you a lot of time and money in the end.. those motors are so cheap...
if you live in VIctoria or SA and want to get rid of it i might buy it off ya... depends what options it has...
i am just saying this to cover myself.. but a mate of mine has a car yeard and he said he did see a 4 banger commodore. was exprted out of australia and then imported back here again and put through the auctions.. don't know how much truth is to it though... and i also thought he said it was vr's or vs's
A VK/VL is not as wide as a VN so the K frame probably won't fit, the mounting points on the K frame for the 3.8 are completely different from the 202. Maybe V8 engine mounts could be used with maybe a little bit of modification to fit(RE:Maybe).
im in new zealand so there are sweet **** all laws tht hold me back, and its a four cyclinder 2L 5speed and my m8 has a 202 which is a 3.3L which also has a 5speed, yea i lookd at putn a 3.8 v6 in it but they sell 4 like $1000 ova here not 2 many ppl here r into there holdens, bt i love them ay, used 2 hav a 74 kinga wagon
yeh im from nz aswell, sweet f all to hold you back then man, alot of fabrication in it to get all the engine mounts n crap done, by the time you by the 3.8L the conversion for the 202 is gonna cost you a similar amount, the difference is the 3.8 will be a hell of alot easier, you can just steal all the mounts straight off another vn, you can steal everything you need off another vn, also if the laws here are anything to go by, you'll have alot of hassles justifying putting an older engine into a newer car, they just wont accept it because of the epa laws. Also i think your mate has had a similar thing happen to his vl, assuming it is vl and not a vk. sumones ripped out the nissan 3.0L and thrown in an old 202 the vls missed out on the 202 by a year. My advice is go for the 3.8 and save your money for a v8, tub it and a nice big bonnet scoop, coz its all legal babyn yeh holdens are reasonbly expensive back home.
Yeah the VK 5spd suffers from the gearstick popping out, especially during burnouts! LOL
vl had that tendency in second![]()
so that is where to 4 banger commodores went.. why the hell did they bother.. so what model is this car. the 87 model one. is it a vl or vk. i didn't think they made vk's in 87. if it is a vl. why the hell would someone put a 202 into a vl. geez. some peopel...
one think going for this idea..
does anyone know with vn's are the k frames the same in v6's and v8's. if so, i am thinking the older holden v8's use the same engine mounts. if that is so do the older holdens say a vk. have the same k frame for v8 and straight 6's. if that is all right i spose ya could bolt a 202 into a vn. just don't know how ya would go with the cross member for the gear box. and the tail shaft. i would love to see pictures if you ever do it..
i hope all that makes sense..
Well it's up to you, this can be done. As at our local speedway, someone has a VN with a 202 in it.
Yours Kindly,
Jim
yeah i would say aswell go to wreckers and pick up a 3800 vn motor, prolly only bout 200 300 dollars most i wrekon, and also how come a 90model vn has a 4 cylinder 2.0 litre, whatever hapened to the original v6 3.8 ltr??
the vn's that were exported to foreign markets had 4cylinders
as far as i know holden exported cars to NZ, and maybe other cars and put 4 bangers in some of them..
coopr said he lives in NZ and he doesn't have the money to buy a 3.8 as they cost over 1000 over there..
ya posted that one while i was typing premmy. lol
still roughly work out to the same cost as its gonna take to put the 202 in. theres alot of fabrication work there.
too much stuffing around for me i reckon
as if youd leave the four banger in there though, youd sell the 202 and tranny, and use that to get funds for the 3.8L and then all your mounts are premade and everythings easy to source. Worth the effort to get rid of the four pot
shit yeah.. i agree. otherwise it is too much work for a run around car..
go for ease i sayim replacing my 3.8L v6 with a... 3.8L v6 haha! talk about a power increase!
