hi,just wondering if i need a trans oil cooler ?,plan on towing an old york 14ft van,empty 500kg/750 loaded, on plan on doing 200/300km trips thanks.......

i hope this isn't bad advice. but i use to tow here and there with my old vn auto and never had a trouble. then again i only ever towed once when it was really hot. i couldn't use the A/C as the car would get a bit hot. i spose if you are doing it every day ya might want to look into getting one..

Autotrans is cooled by heat exchanger in LH tank of radiator. If you are towing heavy loads regularly and in hot weather then an engine oil cooler as well as a larger external transmission cooler would be a good investment. Before spending the money I would invest in 2 temp gauges, 1 for engine oil and the other for the transmission and see if they go over 110 degrees. If either goes ove this temperature then I would in vest in a cooler for the offending item (eng oil or auto), changing the oil after it is done. A lot depends on the environment in which you drive eg stop/start city or open road or hill climbing as to what is likely to happen.

You dont 'need' it but it would be advisable to get one. Its all about polonging the life of things and oil coolers help prolong the life of your trans if your towing.
