    Default fan speed resistor

Hi, my fan for the AC stopped working lately on ALL speeds. my question is would it be the fan speed resistor as i dont want to go and dish out 50 odd bucks for a new one and not fix the problem. Also would the resistor cause all speeds to stop working, i always thought you lost a couple but not all. Cheers

From what I've heard if the resistor goes 1-3 dies but 4 normally still works. Check all the connections to the fan motor, and actually check the fan motor itself. You may have just killed the little electric motor that spins the fan.

you're right mouce, if the fan resistor goes, speed 4 should still work as it connects straight to a positive source (ie not through any resistance to slow the fan down). It sounds to me like you have lost all power to the fan speed switch (check your fuses). either that or the fan has stopped working. you need to check with a multimeter if you have power coming into the fan speed selection switch and then if it is going to the motor. If that all checks out, then its the motor. I should think the motors are pretty tough though.

That motor, is going to be like all electric motors, they will just keep working for as long as the bushes inside them are fine. Once the bushes wear down, time for a new motor.

I checked the fuse today and it was fine. I progressed further and found that there wasnt even power at the fuse using a test light, so what does that mean? Where could the problem be if its before the fuse? any comments would be helpful. Cheers

The blower motor sits behind the glovebox. It's not hard to see, but I don't know how hard it will be to swap it over.

No power at the fuse? This might be a bit of a blonde question, but did you test the right end of the fuse holder? If there is no power getting to the fan, it's time to start digging a bit further back along the loom to find where the wire has let go.

I can't remember if there is a relay that is meant to kick in or not, have a look around.

Yeah i tested both sides when i done it to make sure. Odd problem but, so you reckon a wire has come loose. I will have a look but electrical isnt my best subject. Maybe even a relay or something but might have to get it to sparkies. Also another question, I know that the engine fan is supposed to turn on when the A/C is on (as it can't know that the AC fan stopped working), and the other day when it was sitting there it got to about 3/4 on the temp guage and it didnt kick in so could this be a symptom of the problem aswell.

Is there any way of testing a relay to see if its dead???

speed 4 wont work, only 5 will. You have 1,2,3,4 and then high, only the high will work!

Woah huge thread DIG!! On a commodore (vn-vs anyway) there is only 4 fan speeds, no 'high', but in any case the fastest fan speed will always be non-resisted.
