ALDL Cable Problem?

Hey i finally got around to buying an ALDL cabe for my VN V6, when i got around to using it, i pluged it into my ecu eith out the laptop pluged in and the engine light flickers.

Is this meant to happen?

yes. The communication wire is also hooked up to the light.

Thanks, it flickers faster than the usual ecu diag mode.. is still normal?
