no tranny doesn't have to be on engine, all you need is a container full of fuel, not a big container just put enough fuel in it for it to idle over for a minute or 2,have your starter hooked up to flex plate, bypass the starter,"geez" it's been ages *LOL* since iv'e done this...work out what wire is what and touch them together, not sure how it's going to run unless you hook up the ECU with it.

just the front wiring loom, from ECU front wards ,(to all sensors)don't really need the battery...doesn't matter though...

Without an exhaust on it, you're not going to be able to hear much at all, not in terms of clunking anyway. I could see it being fairly loud.

it will be loud with out mufflers not death loud but enough to piss your neightbours/mother off.
if i were to start it up out of the car, i thought about it but never did it.
i would but the motor on the floor on a ruber mat or something.
    leave the transmisson on.
leave the y-pipe on and you could probley connect a muffler to it.
have the engine crane holding so it can jump or ran away, just have the crane to stop it falling over if it trys to.
connect the ecu up to it/wiring looms and a battery. you will probaley need like a full loom engine bay and relays and igntion etc.
then turn the key. maybe have some mates come around incase something goes wrong. always a good idea.
thats just how i would go about it have fun

as for the radiator dont worry about it pull the thermostat out and just run a pipe where the radiator should be so at least its pumping water through its self.

yeah leave the tranny on, so you can hook up the starter motor into the bellhousing/inspection plate, depending on model.,
