Default Wat engine oil do you use?

I just did my regular oil change on my Vp and decided to get some new oil usally i just get Castrol GTX2 but this time i got Vavoline XLD armour protection its rated at 15-40 instead of 20-50 but i need the thinner oil cause i have to crank for like 15 secs in the morning to start the best casue of a broken-blocked oil pickup which isnt fixed yet

So i was just wanting to know wat oil do you put in you commie?

just for the record the best oil of all time- Royal Purple. i have a copy of a street commodore mag that ran tests on quite a few different brands.
both castrol brands mentioned scored very, very poorly. ill pm any1 the results of these "tests" if they want them.

Penrite HPR15 soon to be HPR30. You can have your Castrol oils, and your valvoline oils. Give me Penrite any day.

Just for the record I used to run magnetec, and it wasn't a bad oil, but penrite shits all over it.

wat makes an oil better then the next? and how do you really tell the difference?? does it make the car go faster?? smoother idle?? warms up quicker??

my mechanic told me to go penrite hpr30.

The way I judge the penrite to be my favourite engine oil is simple, after mucking around with a few different ones, I gave penrite a shot. And when I did the next change (10,000km later) it was the cleanest 'used' engine oil I've ever seen. After about 3,000-5,000 all the other oils were starting to show that they were getting a LOT darker in colour.

After 8,000km is when the penrite first started to change. Up until then it had that really nice light golden brown colour to it. By 8,000km all the other oils were black.

As for making a car go faster, some people claim they can tell the difference between oils in terms of acceleration, I never noticed a difference.

I got Penzoil 20w 50.... yes yes I have an older car and it does the trick, plus I add X1R for the added lubrication. I fully believe in engine additives, they have worked wonders, In fact a friend of mine ran his v8 around the race track. NO OIL, just a bottle of X1R and it never overheated at all!! Had friends cars (not holden) but they were chugging around and I added some of X1R and they got about 10 years back into their power! Dont judge until you try!

well thats not always good, the darker the colour the better the detergent level IMO. (as long as it isnt pitch black coz u may have a rooted engine )

^^Fair point that. But then again, if you saw the used (read: dead) magnetec that was coming out, you'd agree that it was not doing a good job of keeping anything clean.

The penrite coming out is much darker than when it went in, but it's still got that nice golden brown colour deep inside it. But the other oils were black.

Also, I know the engine isn't rooted, because it's not actually burning oil at an excessive rate, the rear main seal leaks like a sieve but that's all. There's no smoke from the exhaust even at full throttle, so that's promising.

The original oil in the VN/VP engines (and I could be wrong on this), was a 15w-40 oil from what I know.

That said, these engines aren't new anymore, and allowing for the fact that most are now on the ugly side of 250,000kms using a thicker oil is quite alright. In fact there was someone posting on here the other week about how they have a 40w-70 in there just to stop the leaks.

Most people find that a 15w oil is too thin and leaks out through the rear main seal. So a slightly thicker oil is good.

A 20w-50 oil would be fairly good as long as it's a good oil.

LOL, I know someone's mum who actually changed the oil in her car and put cooking oil in. Needless to say, that engine didn't last too long.

First oil change i did it with Shell oil Forgot which one but it was 20-50.
Next oil change i used Castrol GTX2 20-50.
The shell was very good, The castrol burns a little early on warm up. But after that it seems great.
My Friend used magnetic once in his VR Berlina and it blew out smoke all the time, It was just to thin for his car.
