Hi,
I had an accident yesterday (wasn't my fault!) and i went to a couple panel beaters today and they both gave written off quotes.
So obviously i'm getting a payout... and i'm just wondering what amount i'm likely to get, and if its worth trying to keep the car to salvage parts. Do they often take a good amount off your payout if you want to keep the car?
The damage is all in the front and there is no suspension or engine damage (the car still drives perfectly), so there is lots of stuff that can be salvaged.
the car is an 89' VN calais V6.
if your not insured (sounds like your not) then you will only get market value so expect only a couple of grand
im not admiring your car im looking in disgust
Normally, if you keep the car they reduce the payout by a lot for obvious reasons - ie they recoup payout losses by selling cars to wreckers etc.For a VN, even a Calais, don't expect much. My standard VP is market value 3600 to give you a ballpark figure.
why would you think i'm not insured? i'm insured, but only 3rd party fire and theft.
I would have thought that i would at least get market value.
ok now i had mine stolen last Melbourne cup day
89 VN pretty clean with VT clubsport kit six stacker cd cai and sports exhaust and they found it and wrote it off because they blew the engine and transmission and i got $3800 back ( i did talk them up from 3200 )
I asked about getting some of the parts off the car and they said i would have to go and buy it from the auction where they sell all their cars.
I was insured with suncorp up here in Brisbane
So i got the payout brought the misus a new Mitsubishi Verada and i took her stock as VP and spent the whole lot on that you should see her now!!!
Any way goodluck
mate of mine had his vn grp a lookalike, really a calais with a kit, just before x-mas, V8 & he bought the wreck back from the insurance company for $600! If the insurance company hasn't looked at the car yet, clean it!!!everywhere.
if its insured for third party fire & theft i don't think you'll get a cent !!!!!!!!!!
(read the pds on your policy)
They wouldn't insure my series II VP V8 for more than $3700 I bought it for almost that much and have allready spent like 400 in it :P and I have many more dollars to go till it's in mint mechanical condition
looks like it depends on the insurance company as to what can and can't be done.
coolngroovy - are you saying i should clean the car up to look as best as possible (besides the bent in front!!!) so that i could possibly get more out of the insurance comp?
What sort of stuff did you tell them to talk them up? I imagine I will be going through the processes later this week... obviously want to get the most i can (although I'll still lose like $3-4k on the whole thingOriginally Posted by cbb01

Driving a CURSED WH V6.
I got hit at a roundabout a few years ago. At that time I only had third party. Even though it wasn't my fault, my insurer didn't want to know about it as I wasn't comprehensively insured.
The other driver admitted fault although I was given the runaround by him as he didn't bother making a claim through his insurance company (My guess is that he didn't want to lose his no claim bonus) so I had to get my solicitor to write a letter to him to hurry up and put the claim through so I could get the car fixed. He put in a claim pretty much straight away. From that day on I went for comprehensive insurance. (with another insurance company of course!)
depending on the insurance company.....you won't see your car again, they pay you out the agreed value when you insured it,also many insurance companies won't even let you get your stereo out of your own car,and if they do, it's a lot of paperwork.your car goes to what they call a salvage auction and get what they can for them...usually in the vicinity of$300-$500,thats how the insurance companies make their money if you like, not only making it from your premiums, but they own the vehicle once you have been paid out,and thats the extra cash that they make nowadays.i think the days of first option of you re-buying the car off them have long gone, because they know they can get more for them at salvage auctions, than what your willing to offer.Originally Posted by pauleee
heres an example...i go to these kind of auctions regularly, there was a monaro written off,now i do written off cars up for after hours hobby, and was looking at this one,was going to be too much for me to do,the roof was level with the seats...allround,gravel rashed, not a good panel on it....sold for $14,500.00
i've still got the car! and i will definitely be taking the stereo out before i take it to get assessed next week!
Take it out while you can, although they may ask you to replace with the original gear, or pay the value of the original gear.
Mine was nice, I'm heading to the crash shop saturday morning. I can take anything that wasn't on the policy, so long as i replace it with the original parts.

Yeah i had my VN Calais stolen almost three weeks ago. It turned up about a week ago with the stereo stolen, No back tyres, all the plastics around the center console all smashed up, the steering collum was all bent and broken, a window was smashed and a mechanical report was done saying that all engine had been cooked and the gearbox oil was very low and smelt burnt.
I had a repairer look at it and he wrote it off so now i have to wait for the insurance company to asses it and confim it to be a write off. I bought the car for $3100 about 8 months ago but if they do write it off i will get $5500 for it as they wouldnt let me insure it for any less then that when i bought the car.
