My mate done the diff in his series 2 vn. He went and got a diff out of a very stock VR. Apparntly it spins 2 wheels. Now he rekns that its lsd. I say that its not. I do lineys in my stock VP and it spins 2 wheels the whole way. And he says my diff is ****ed. I say, go to hell urs is ****ed too. And he goes, no its lsd. Well i say bull shit, VR's didnt come stock with LSD. What do u say?
what model VR did he get the diff out of?
1995 Manual HSV Clubsport
Wade Cam :: 9.2:1 CR :: Pacemaker headers :: Twin 2.5" Exhaust :: VT Brakes
1991 Supercharged VN Berlina
9 PSI SC14 Intercooled :: Genie headers :: Twin cats :: HM Twin 2.25 exhaust :: 3.45:1 LSD
It wasn't standard but it was only a couple hundred extra as an option so a fair few Commdores came with LSD's
Another way is to get the diff serviced and check physically to see if it's an lsd or not
Jack the rear n grab n spin 1 of the wheels. If they rotate the same direction its LSD, if opposite directions right forward/left reverse open wheeler...
There is a very easy way to check. If it's an LSD it should have a tag on it saying something like "High performance, use specified fluid only". If not and you're still not sure, then jack up both sides at the rear with the handbrake off and spin one wheel by hand, if the other one turns in the same direction then it's either an LSD or a severely rooted single spinner.
Lol, great minds think alike NOGEN 3!
ive heard of "High performance" tagged diffs no being lsd's, so i spose the opnly real way is to do the above with the jack and the wheel spinning
Hah, yeah when I found the tag on my diff by almost ripping the top of my head off on it I was a bit sceptical for that exact reason. Not just holden that have done that either, a lot of early e-series falcon diffs had similarly misleading tags.Originally Posted by CSL

Very good point actually, hadn't thought of that.Originally Posted by CSL

I think all the V8 diffs have the high performance tag, the LSD's have another tag againOriginally Posted by pandaman
OK, dang. So any idea what the LSD tag says? Mine has the high performance tag and it behaves like an LSD, so it either is one, or it's a welded single spinner which would be bad, although wouldn't surpise me given some of the other odd things I've found on this vehicle.Originally Posted by greenfoam
"Limited Slip Differentials have a red/brown coloured filler plug"
My lsd which came from factory has a red/brown plug and the tag has a serial no. sort of code on it, not a "high performance tag".
I am pretty sure the diffs with "high performance" tags on them are single wheelers. I have seen 2 statesmans that 2 of my mates own with the high performance tag on them and are both single wheelers, one is a vq statesman 5.0 and the other is a vs statesman supercharged v6. The lsd diffs have a tag with "L.S.D use approved lubricants" only on it.
hav a look at ur indetification tags under the bonnet, on one of them if u have LSD it says GU4, i thought i had LSD in my calais cos i could spin both wheels, the reason being i used to be able to spin both wheels was cos of the skinnys(205's) , now that im running 235's it very rarely spins both, unless its raining, not that i want to spin them as 235's are pretty expensive
GU4 means borg warner live axle rear end. If it has live axle borg warner 78 series diff it will have GU4 on the i.d plate regardless of l.s.d or single wheeler.
Well I checked my V8 today and it's a single spinnerand has the high performance tag on the diff and no red/brown plug
Beat u by .00000013 of a second. ha ha ha!.Some open wheels have the hi po tags. dunno why, heavy duty bearings??Originally Posted by pandaman
yeah, both of mines got the LSD tag...Originally Posted by VN Calais 5.0

It seems that the high performance tag is to tell ya that it has shot-peened internals. And on second inspection I've changed my mind, mine is a single spinner as well. Couldn't be arsed jacking up both sides, so I just put one up and then tried spinning the wheel by hand, spun fairly easily which should mean it's the open wheeler, it doesn't have a red/brown filler plug either so I'm convinced. Now my question is why both wheels turned the same direction when I tried it with the other wheel off the ground as well? If I get time on the weekend I'll have another fiddle and see what happens. Bet it turns the other way, just to make me think I'm losing my mind.
EDIT: Seems that a certain site is censored, whoops! well if y'all wanna access the thread I'm sure ya know what it is :-)
Thats why you get someone else to hold the other wheel so they can feel it turning or not turning. If its LSD you can really feel the force from the other person turning the wheel.
