Okie dokie! WELL i have had the guage in my car for well over a month now and im still banging my head on the wall looking for the oil temperature sensor or some other sort of sensor of its type! i have the Water Temp in and done.. im just having trouble finding where to put the Oil Temperature Sensor?!
Does the VN even have a Oil Temp sensor!? i dont really want to drill into my sump n put one in there.. is there anywhere else i should put it or where else should i mount the temp sensor? the guage goes to 160degree's, should i put it on the intake or even better! has the transmission got a temperature sensor?
Also i try and run both my temp sensors (standard & guage) on the same sensor and the new guage will fail & just ski rocket, and the the dash wont move.. Are these 2 guages like.. acting as a positive signal and negative signal???? (i think the new guage is positively triggered) so if i run a relay of that wire converting it to a negative signal will this be enough to work the standard dash signal?!?!?!??!
Car goes in to be painted on the 1st, when it rolls out on the 14th i want it to be almost completly functional.![]()
Never Look Back
The best place for your oil temp sensor is in a place where there is a constant flow of used oil. In a dry sump I have seen them used on the scavenge pump outlet. I used to have one fitted to a rotor on the inlet line going to the oil cooler. Really anywhere would be OK as long as there is a volume of oil to check. A fitting in the side of the sump near the bottom will be fine, just keep it as low as possible/practical to keep it away from windage. If you have an engine oil cooler fitted use the inlet line on that for your pickup point. Not sure about the transmission but it would be hard to go wrong using the same point as you want to know the oil temp before it is cooled not after.
The best type to use is a thermocouple probably a K type as they are the most common. These use a change in resistance to measure the temp and converted to a temp by the gage. Not the stuff you would normally see in a speed shop though. You may be able to get a capillary type of temp gage and sender but these are never really accurate. A bit like the el cheapo water temp gages you can get. A water temp gage may be OK for the job but it will probably be to low in range.
Good electrical gages are the best way to go, try your local autoelec that has would have a catalog so you can look up the correct sender unit to suit the gages you have. If you want to keep the stock temp gage just use an additional sender unit for the new gauge.
VDO make an oil temp sensor that takes the place of your dipstick. It's got a thermocouple on the end of it. They make a couple of different lengths, one of them just happens to be an almost perfect match for a VN commodore.
